NAS strategy

Created: 07 Feb 2005 • Updated: 21 May 2010 | 3 comments

Although I'm experienced with Backup Exec I'm new to backing up to NAS.
We have a number of remote global locations that are now using BEXEC9 to backup to NAS. The majority of these NAS servers have a capacity of +740GB.
These have had no standard strategy applied to backup and therefore we are running out of space. I've been requested to iron out these issues. I have examples of too many B2D folders versus not enough disk to configure going by the size of backups both Diff and Full.

As a starting point with an example backup of diff 25GB and full 50Gb, planning on setting up say 2 media sets -diff & -full.
diff (3 weeks)
full (4 weeks)
Total for 7days x rotation period 650GB approx.

Can anyone out there with more NAS backup experience comment on this to point any failings or recommend something different? Thanks.

I will have to tidy up the existing setups before configuring new.

I would need more clarification from you on this:
diff (3 weeks)
full (4 weeks)
can you be more specific as how many days a week you want to appned to for diff and overwrite for FUll backup?

My point of view:

You are concerned with space issue, I would suggest creating 2 sepatere B2D fodlers for each backup strategy such as :

On the same NAS device:
1B2d for Full
2B2D for Diff

2 media sets.

1-MS for DIff
2-MS for Full

Now if you are overwriting the 1B2D for each Full backup you are saving the disk space because you are not creating another OR appending to the same BKF file.

With respect to Diff, When do you want to overwrite the BKF file (media) if you want to append to the same BKF file and and then overwrite on alternate weeks ?

Can u give some more inputs on how exactly u want?
