NBU 5220 IO messages

Created: 21 Aug 2013 | 3 comments

I have a 5220 running 2.5.2 and have the EEB installed for the constant messages for high IO.  However, I do occasionally still get an alert and want to make sure that things are OK.  In searching, I found this command,  iostat -kx 300 2, and with it the person mentions to check for high await.  My issue is that I do not know what is considered high/bad/something that should concern me.

I have one that is at 28.28, but I don't know if that is good bad or normal.  Looking at all the others that are under 5 (a few have 8, 9, 11), 28 seems high, so I thought to ask.  Thanks.

Here are the first several lines to give an idea of what I see.

Looks like it is milli seconds - see this article: http://www.igvita.com/2009/06/23/measuring-optimizing-io-performance/

I am guessing sda is the O/S disk of the appliance which indicates that the system itself is the busiest which i guess is not that surprising

sbd and sdc will be the catalog / de-dupe / advanced disk areas - all the rest are VMWare LUNS (I am guessing)

From what i have seen it does not look excessively high

Hope this helps

@smakovits,

Please share the i/o alerts text message you see.

There is a known issue on 5220's 2.5.1 & 2.5.2, where when no backup jobs run, still there is a warning alert emailed by the appliance to the admin!

EEB is available for the same. I am sure it is already part of the new 2.5.3 release!

If this is correct for you - Please contact Symc Support / upgrade to 2.5.2 version!

Thanks!

I think the alert was a false positive related to some other appliance related issues I was having.  Since this posting, I have seen no alerts.  I contacted support and they revealed that the levels seen were not bad.  Part of the issue could have been that I was not limiting the number of I/O streams, so while backing up, AIR-ing and hydrating to tape, it is very possible that I was in fact using high IO...but since then this seems to have settled down, set IO limit to 60.
