This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have VMWare backups working - Policy - ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES. Works well. vCentre - ESX servers - NBU

How do I do SQL backups if client software is not on servers?

Is there a tech note?

my understnding says.. needs to install client software and configure the DB agent..(i could be wrong)..

extracted form  Netbackup for VmWare admin guide page 16

About the virtual machine backups that include database data
When NetBackup backs up a VMware virtual machine, database data in the virtual
machine is backed up with the rest of the virtual machine. A new feature in
NetBackup 7.5 allows the recovery of individual database files from the backup.
This feature supports Microsoft Exchange Server, SQL Server, and SharePoint
Note the following:
To enable restore of individual database files, a NetBackup Windows client
must be installed in the virtual machine during the backup.
■ NetBackup uses Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to quiesce the
database before it creates a snapshot of the virtual machine.
■ A full backup is performed of the database data with each backup job, even if
the policy schedule is incremental.

Nagalla is right.

NBU 7.1 still needs the agent to be installed in the VM in order to backup SQL.
Configure separate SQL agent backup.

NBU 7.5 can backup all-in-one with the VM backup method.

Supporting Storage Foundation and VCS on Unix and Windows as well as NetBackup on Unix and Windows
