Need to Backup FS->MsSql DB ->FS incremental

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

I have the request to create using the NetBcakup Agent MsSQL and the creation of policies (NetBcakup 7.5) a sequence as a whole of 3 different types of backups :

1st- File System(FS)

2nd- DB FULL

3rd- File System incremental ( to the same source of the 1st)

Is it possible to have a Policy that aggregates these 3 types of backups on the Symantec Netbackups ?

How can it be made?

Is it necessary to lauch it from the DB Server side and not from the Symantec Netbackup Master side ?

I do have Netbackup Client installed on the Server where the DB is running and where the FS is.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The full and incremental file system backups can go into a MS-Windows policy but the SQL backup must be in its own policy of the MS-SQL-Server policy type.

For the SQL Backup you will need to go onto the client first and use the NetBackup SQL Client (on the Start Menu) to configure SQL access and create the .bch file for the backup - you then point to that file in the policy

See the SQL Admin guide for full details

Also make sure  you create a different policy for each SQL retention you want (daily, weekly etc.) as the retention is taken from the application backup schedule

Hope this helps

Hi Mark

Thanks for the indicationssmiley.

I not sure however it will be possible to do it just by using Netbackups menus.

I think the Netbackup maybe not allow what I am looking for, just for the standard configurations Menus.

I think it has to be made with a script because the netbackup doesn't allow the configuration of Mixed FS-DB-FS schedules in its policies (I think). Am I wrong ?

Mixed FS-DB-FS schedules in its policies (I think). Am I wrong ?

yes and no :)   this is what you need to make NetBackup and your users happy

a FS Policy with Full and Incremental Schedules

and DB Policy with Full Schedule

Hi Wr

Thanks for the indications but what I need is just one  policy that could contain the in its schedules the 3 types of backup:

1st FS Full

2nd DB full

3rd FS inc

Could this be made, or not, even creating the policies you mentioned ?

you must have two policies; cannot combine Filesystem and DB Agent in one

You need one policy for File System plus SQL policies for each retention period that you need

So if you have daily, weekly and monthly retentions you may need three SQL polcies

You cannot do it all in one policy

As I have said your option to successfuly do this is as follows:

1. A file system policy with full and incremental schedules as required

2. A daily SQL policy

3. A weekly SQL policy

4. A monthly SQL policy

5. A SQL transaction log policy if desired

Hi Mark

Maybe I don't make myself clear.

The backup to do has to be done in sequence, even if the policies are created in separated.

I agree with you about the policies that shoul exist, but the question is how is assure using Netbackup that the backup sequence is 1st FS Full policy, followed be the MsSQL DB policy and then by the FS inc policy, if it isnot possible to do all these 3 on  only policy.

Thanks

The backup to do has to be done in sequence

(this is Will not Mark, but no matter)  You can control sequence via Schedule windows.   For example, start FS Full on Friday night, DB Full on Saturday night, FS Incremental on Sunday-Thursday nights.
