Do SMC and SEP service have a difference?

    No,

SmcService :- Provides communication with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. It also provides network threat protection and application and device control for the client.

When SMC service are stoped sep client are not working

great.. Will stopping SMC stop the NTP feature ? or it just stop pulling definitions of NTP from SEPM.

basically stopping SMC will cause NTP or FW to stop working.. The reason i ask is.. if NTP is blocking some traffic.. will stopping SMC help identifying the issue?

I have seen few discussions where stopping the SMC ,disables NTP also.

Let me pull that discussion for you...

If you want to disable NTP, you need to use this command

To disable SEP client firewall service

    smc -disable –ntp

    To enable client firewall service

    smc -enable -ntp

If the SEP client UI is password protected:

    smc -disable -ntp -p <password>
