Hello All,

Currently we are using Netbackup 7.0 on windows 2K8 as Master(Attached 8 Drives based Library) and Master is Managing 3 Media servers and among 3 Media servers, 1 Media server is using to take Backup of 2 NetApp Boxes(4 Tape Drives Based Library). now we had an requriment to move this Media Server, NetApp boxes, 4 Tapes Based Library(Tapes) to another state around 500 kilometers and we will configure in new state, here my client questions id incase of any Media server damage or NetApp box damage  happens on journey how come we can overcome the problem. in case of any damage to NetApp boxes i can recover the Data from Tapes which are backup in last week, but coming to media server what will be the impact? if any crash to media server ? what the steps to bring the media server normal state ? hope i'm clear.could any one please post their idea's and suggestions.

No data or databases is stored on a media server if backup is done to tape only.

NBU catalogs are stored on the master server only.

So, my recommendation is to move media for this media server's robot to Standalone (since tapes will be taken out for the move - assuming the library will be moved as well), then Deactivate this media server before switching it off for the move. It may even be a good idea to delete devices for this media server as Device paths will probably change when reconnected on other side.
Deactivate all policies for this media server.

If anything 'happens' to the media server, simply install it it with same hostname, ensure forward and reverse name lookup between media server and master, install and patch NBU then Activate media server on master server and confirm comms with nbemmcmd and bptestbpcd commands.
If any firewalls, check that ports 1556 and 13724 are open between master and media server.
Lastly, run device config wizard to re-add the robot and tape drives and check STU config.
Inventory robot and activate policies.

Test backups!

If media server arrives in good condition, follw same steps except for reinstall.

Hello Marianne,

Thanks for your valiable suggestions, and i need some more clarifications, for deaction of media servers what i attached is correct below ? and for

So, my recommendation is to move media for this media server's robot to Standalone (since tapes will be taken out for the move - assuming the library will be moved as well), then Deactivate this media server before switching it off for the move------ We will take all media's in Turtle boxes is that your suggesting me ?

It may even be a good idea to delete devices for this media server as Device paths will probably change when reconnected on other side. physically its having 4 drives, so you want me to delete 4 drives right ? if we dont delete i think in NBU it shows as "Missing path" in Drive paths am i right ? and if i delete the drives of NDMP, while moving once the new setup done in new site does i need to look again for NDMP credentials again in Global level and in "Credentials" level in treepane ?

Question :

If media servers are currently attached to drives and robot that is shared with other media server - will robot and tapes be moved along with media server?

Or will media server connect to a new/different robot at new site?

I was assuming that media server and robot will be moved together.
So, steps need to be adjusted based on which robot the media server and NDMP host will attach to.
Deleting devices will prevent seeing 'Missing Paths' when device paths change.

If tape drives are currently attached to NDMP host, this will also need to be reconfigured.
Credentials are saved on the master server. There should be no need to re-add it.
Just test credentials from media server once everything is reconnected on new site.

Yes - that is the right place to deactivate the media server.

Yes Marianne, the media server(which is using to backup 2 NetApp boxes) & Library(robot)  and 2 NetApp boxes will move to new sight, and we will configure them in new site.

In that case, advice in my 1 post stands - delete all devices (incl robot) for the media server and the NDMP filer.
Re-add once connected and visibile at OS level and comms with master server confirmed.

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for your suggestions, i will do according to that, and i had some concerns, we had around 250+ Polices running on your master server, and how can i easily identify the polices which are configured to this moving media server? is there any commnad ? or i need to check it manually each and every policy ?

I cannot think of a single command.

On a Linux/Unix media server, I would pipe bppllist output to egrep policy name and STU name.
I know that the Windows equivalent of grep is findstr, but I don't know how it can be used to select more than one line op output (Policy name and Storage Unit (Residence).

You can output all policy output to a text file and the search the file:

bppllist -allpolicies -U >C:\<folder>\policies.txt
