So I just started this new job last week and was told today that managing the SEP will be my responsibility.  The first thing I need to do is upgrade our version.  Now I come from a Trend background and am totally unfamiliar with the terminologies and layout of this management console.  I'm hoping I can get some pointers here.

We currently have version 11.0.6005.562 installed on our server.  I need to upgrade it to 11.0.6070.422.  Is it as easy as just installing it on the server and letting it propagate down to the clients?  I don't see a way to select a test client for example to push down to.  I keep reading about client packages...do I need to create update packages or something for the clients?

Also, will the server need to be rebooted?

Sorry for the probably dumb questions.  As I said, I've never used this software before and am a little lost.  Thanks in advance!

11.0.6070.422. this version is MR6 MP1 its not yet officially out hence would recomend not to upgarde the production network as of now.

You can try it for testing.

We (my boss really) were provided this install by Symantec to fix an issue we are having on a few systems.  It's a big problem and we need to put this in place very, very soon.

    Please check this link

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2010041310404248

    Check this part

    To migrate client software
    1. Log on to the newly migrated Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console.
    2. Click Admin > Install Packages.
    3. In the lower-left pane, under Tasks, click Upgrade Groups with Package.
    4. In the Welcome to the Upgrade Groups Wizard panel, click Next.
    5. In the Select Client Install Package panel, all existing client packages are listed in the drop down box. Select one of the following:
      • Symantec Endpoint Protection <appropriate version>.
      • Symantec Network Access Control <appropriate version>.
    6. Click Next.
    7. In the Specify Groups panel, check one or more groups that contain the client computers to be migrated, then click Next.
    8. In the Package Upgrade Settings panel, check Download client from the management server.
    9. Click Upgrade Settings.
    10. In the Add Client Install Package dialog box, on the General tab, specify whether or not to keep existing client features or specify new ones, then configure a schedule for when to migrate the client computers. Under the Notification tab, specify a message to display to users during the migration.
      • If the clients in the group run a version of Symantec Endpoint Protection previous to MR2, turn off scheduling. Scheduling is on by default when a new client install package is added to a group. If scheduling is turned on, the upgrade fails. To turn off scheduling, in the Add Client Install Package dialog box, uncheck Upgrade Schedule.
    11. For details about settings on these tabs, click Help.
    12. Click OK.
    13. In the Upgrade Groups Wizard dialog box, click Next.
    14. In the Upgrade Groups Wizard Complete panel, click Finish.

Okay, it sounds like I should be able to upgrade rather easily.  Can someone please confirm that I will NOT have to reboot the server though when I upgrade?

Upgrading the SEPM should not need a reboot.
And on the clients if you have NTP installed then after the upgarde you will need to reboot. but you can do that at the end of the day. it wont immediately start the reboot.

    Not needed

Do I need to restart the Symantec Endpoint Protection client after migration?
A restart is not required, but the computers that are not restarted after migration are protected with only AntiVirus/AntiSpyware features. You must perform a restart to protect your computers with firewall features.

Ug...one thing after another!  I'm trying to upgrade right now and am getting the following error when trying to run the setup:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I am logged in as Administrator, I have permissions.  I can't even open up the autorun.inf file!  What gives???

To clarify, I am installing it on a Windows Server 2003.  This error occurs when I try and run the setup.exe; not the lusetup.exe as I have read online.

I got it installed now.  Turns out Microsoft was being a jerk and blocking it.

Okay, well I'm not 100% done with this.  I got the server upgraded just fine.  I was able to manually update a few clients by right-clicking on the tray icon and selecting "update policy".  However, when I try to upgrade the rest of the computers in that group via the console, the clients aren't getting updated.  I've even gone as far as doing the "run command - update content".  But the clients are still running the older version.  It's been 2 days now.  They should have been updated by now.

Help!  What am I missing here???
