Netbackup 6.5 / license file ?

Created: 17 Jun 2014 • Updated: 26 Jun 2014 | 10 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am rebuilding an old 6.5 master server with the same name. Is there a file in 6.5 containing all the license information that I can copy from the original master, to the newly built master ?

On October 3, 2012, NetBackup 6.x  reached the End of Support Life (EOSL).Please plan for upgrade to avoid any support issues/problems.

To view current license keys, run the following:
Windows ; Go to installation path

example;

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>bpminlicense -list_keys -verbose
UNIX command location: /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpminlicense -list_keys -verbose

-list_keys - Lists the keys in the NetBackup license file.

-verbose - Displays additional information to standard output.

License info is kept under /usr/openv/netbackup/var.

It is best to list licenses with get_license_key or with bpminlicense commands and copy & paste them when installing NBU on new server.

I hope you are moving to a new server in preparation of NBU upgrade?

Yes. We already have a separate 7.5 environment we are using.

This 6.5 environment is an old one we still need around for older restore requests.

Eventually, I'd like to import all the tapes from the 6.5 environment into our 7. environment.

Please make sure that DR file and Tape info/details are handy

for Rebuilding Master Server-verify below post , Mark has explained very detailed in it

I'm aware of the EOSL for 6.5. I'm not using this in production, just trying to pull information.

Can I copy over the netbackup license file to the new master ?

Marianne's picture

You can try, but I remember having issues doing that some years ago.
(Cannot remember details....)

I found it best to copy output from above commands to a text file and adding it with copy&paste on the new server.

So, copy the file with NBU down and see if it is all there when you start NBU.

Good luck!

bpminlicense, It manages the NetBackup license file.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

DESCRIPTION

The bpminlicense utility manages a NetBackup license file. The preferred method to manage NetBackup licenses is to use the Help > License Keys panel in the NetBackup Administration Console. For UNIX servers, you may use the get_license_key utility to manage the NetBackup licenses. This action is preferred to this command.

As per sri vani - bpminlicense is a command.

Have you had a look at contents of /usr/openv/netbackup/var folder yet?

I do not have access to a system to check, but I think there may be a file called license.txt (although not a real text file).

So, to summarise what we have tried to tell you up to now:

  1. You can try to copy file(s) across with NBU down, but it may not work.
  2. Run commands like bpminlicense and get_license_key to list existing license key that you can save in a text file from where you can copy&paste the license keys on the new server.

I just verified the license.txt file, It  is available in  /usr/openv/var/license.txt (path).
