We currently have an issue backing up our new Exchange 2007 environment.

Site1

Netbackup 6.5.3 Master/Media server on Windows 2000 SP4
Exchange 2007 SP1 Site 1 Active Node in CCR Cluster running on Windows 2008
Exchange 2007 SP2 Site 2 Passive Node in CCR Cluster running on Windows 2008

Policies are as follows:-

Backup Site2 Information store (of the passive) Mon-Fri Full backup
Backup Site2 Public Folder (of the passive) Mon-Fri Full backup
backup Site2 Mailboxes (of the passive) Sun Full backup

Site2

Netbackup 6.5.3 Master/Media server on Windows 2000 SP4
Exchange 2007 SP1 Site 2 Active Node in CCR Cluster running on Windows 2008
Exchange 2007 SP2 Site 1 Passive Node in CCR Cluster running on Windows 2008

Backup Site1 Information store (of the passive) Mon-Fri Full backup
Backup Site1 Public Folder (of the passive) Mon-Fri Full backup
backup Site1 Mailboxes (of the passive) Sun Full backup

On the hostproperties of the Cluster-Name we have configured the option to backup the passive and if not available backup the active.

The problem we have.

  • How can you tell if the backup is actually backing up the passive
  • On site1 we are getting a throughput of 64MB a second which backs up the Inf store of 96GB in 25mins
  • On site2 we are getting a throughput of 6MB a second which backs up the Inf store of 50GB in several hours
  • On a weekend the backup on boths sites locks out our exchange servers and the only way to get them back online is to fail the cluster over.

I just want to make sure we have configured our new backup policies right as there doesn't appear to be much details about this.

Thanks everyone

Try this: Shutdown the

Try this:

Shutdown the passive node and run the backup without any change.  The job should not run as the passive node is shutdown.

Backup passive works only with VSS Snapshot backup

As far as I know, the option "backup passive ..." works when you use snapshot (VSS) backup of Exchange server. When you use standard stream backup, the option "backup passive ..." is ignored by NetBackup and backup reads data only from active node.

So, when you run Exchange backup from NetBackup on site 1, and the active node is on site 2, then you in fact backup data from site 2 (via WAN). This could explain small throughput.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Best regards.

Netbackup 6.5.3 and Exchange 2007

- To determine if the passive node is being backed up in the Exchange 2007 cluster, look for a bpbkar32 process in the process list when the backup is running.  If the bpbkar32 shows up on the active node, then something is not working right.

- Hard to determine what the cause of the difference in speed between the two setups since no network information was given.

- What kind of storage are you using on the backend for the information stores.  If the system is becoming unusable during the full weekend backup, it would indicate to me that you have reached a performance threshhold that Netbackup is further exposing.
