Dear All,

I have some trouble backing up Vitrual Machines in my Netbackup, infact this is my first time configuring the VM's. Here is the setup

1. Netbackup Master server 6.5.4 with LTO 3 connected
2. VCB server on which i have installed Netbackup Master server 6.5.4 (this machine is VM proxy server) with VCB 1.5 installed.
3. Vsphere with 4 VM test machines alreayd running.

I want to know the step by step installation and configuration on the Master server, the proxy server and the Vsphere. Are there any document which shows step by step configuration? I went through so many document that i am confused.

I tired a lot of things but unsuccessful. Are the 3 setups above that i have written are correct to backup VM's?

Thank you in advance.

hi Deepak, i have tired the

hi Deepak,

i have tired the 1st link 293350.htm but it doesnt work.

i tired one more document

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=htt...

i can see the VM;s in the proxy server but wat should i select in backup selctions? ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES. I did that but i get error 156 when i run the job. Snap shot errror.

Even if it runs in the proxy server i.e if u go to the document above, the backups wil be taken locally on the proxy server from the VM's, how will i conigure my Netbackup Master to take that from the proxy. Will that be the physical file i.e VMDK which is backed up on proxy if that is the one than it is easy to make a policy and also i dont need the master server to be installed for this on the proxy server just the agent will do to backup these files.

Hope i make sense. I have tired the solution for 156 error but it is still the same. Is it possible to trigger a job from netbackup to create a snapshot backup using VCB and dump in on the tapes directly or will it dump it on local HDD and than be backedup?

I have the procedure with me

I have the procedure with me but dont have any option to upload here in this post.

You just refer to the below mentioned document.

ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/293350.pdf

After opening refer to the Page number 9 of that document,

Tpoic is naed as "Configure NetBackup"

this document will help you configuring the backup policy with screenshots.

Hope this helps...

Hi Deepak, I have gone

Hi Deepak,

I have gone through the same document with the screen shots, but the problem was the error 156 for SNAPSHOT. i am able to see all the VM's and added the ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES but the backup fails.
i dont know if there is some setting in Vsphere. This setting is only for VM proxy server (i.e VCB +NETBACKUP). wat abt Master server where the LTO is attched?

i can bring a VM's on my backup policy coz i hv already installed the Netbackup agent on it and i can access it through my folder policy. so file level is not a problem coz the setup is same as any other server. Only problem i m facing is taking the whole VM's.

Status Code 156

there are several conditions where you get 156 error...

1. If the VMware backup proxy server has insufficient space in which to mount a snapshot of the virtual machine, the backup fails with status 156. Please free some disk space and retry the backup

2. Please make sure you are not running more than one backup per virtual machine at a time. If you start a second backup of the same virtual machine while the first backup is active, the second job fails with a status 156 after it reaches SNAP_LOCK_TIMEOUT setting(15 minutes by default).

3. In an environment where multiple VMWare jobs are running at the same time, only 1 Snapshot will occur per a media server. Until the first job has released it's Snapshot, the next job will be unable to proceed. To help keep this issue from happening, use the Limit Jobs per Policy attribute on the Policy configuration.

Option #1:
Limit jobs per policy - This policy attribute can be used to limit the number of simultaneous snapshots that occur on each datastore.

Option #2:
It is possible to increase the time that the NetBackup Proxy server will wait before bpfis timeout. Create the following registry key to increase the timeout:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config\BACKUP
Create a REG_DWORD Key: SNAP_LOCK_TIMEOUT
Decimal value should be presented in seconds

Hi Deepak, Thanks for the

Hi Deepak,

Thanks for the reply.

1. If the VMware backup proxy server has insufficient space in which to mount a snapshot of the virtual machine, the backup fails with status 156. Please free some disk space and retry the backup

There is enough space (60 GB and size and VM is 20 GB)on the VM proxy server. When i add the VM's in the policy i m not able to see those VM's under Host Properties->Client Properties to make changes in the VSP settings. Although i hv selected the VCB server and cahnged the VSP settings to no LIMIT.

2. Please make sure you are not running more than one backup per virtual machine at a time. If you start a second backup of the same virtual machine while the first backup is active, the second job fails with a status 156 after it reaches SNAP_LOCK_TIMEOUT setting(15 minutes by default).

i have only run one VM for my test although there are 5 VM's added in the polic
y.

The registry enter is not done yet. I have also checked the VSS option under the shared folder which is also is set to NO LIMIT. Which snalpshot does netabckup use to take VM's backup VSS or VSP?

Even after doing this the backups are showing 156 status.

I really appreciate ur responses thank you .

Have you tried support

Hi Abby - It looks like you've done some research.

1) Did you have NBU's VCB components running successfully with VMware 3.5?
2) If yes, have you tried to resolve this with support?

Hi Peter, I am running a

Hi Peter,

I am running a Vsphere (basically VMware 4), the backups that we run from the VCB to take the VMDK files work and are mounted(copied) on the C:/mnt on the VM proxy server (i.e Netbackup Master Server + VCB FrameworK).

I am wondering if there are any changes to be made on the Vsphere.

One more thing to notice is the configuration part mentioned on most of the documents are related to configure the VM proxy server (i.e Netbackup Master Server + VCB FrameworK) also in my case. How wil i take backups from the VM proxy server? do i have to take the backup of C:\mnt which is a physical dump of the VM;s. In that case i dont need a Master server installed i can just push NBU agent ask  my colleague to write a script to run the VM backup using VCB and dump it some where and i can take the physical file.

Well i m new to VMware and have to go through much document and discussion. I guess and hope there will be many who alreayd are taking backup of VM's using NEtbackup as well as restore.

Just a quick thought

Just a quick thought....

You said your running VCB 1.5 but you need to be running 1.5.1 to be supported with Vsphere!

Thanks

have a look at your bpfis and

have a look at your bpfis and bpbkar logs. you will get a clue from there.

Some tips in troubleshooting Virtual Servers(VCB) failures.

NetBackup VCB Backup jobs fail only with Error 156 (snapshot error encountered)

To get the detailed information about the cause of failure:

ü  Go to E:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\logs\bpfis path and open the Log file based on the Failure date and time.

ü  Find for that Server name

ü  Point out the SOAP request and response Lines.

ü  At the end of SOAP request and response you could find the Error Logs. Some sample errors are below

o   Error: Specifier name:CLIENTNAME matches more than one VM.

o   Solution: VCB found duplicate VM names, It should be renamed

o   Error: Other error encountered: Snapshot creation failed: Operation timed out

o   Solution: Snapshot operation got timed out, check for the I/O Access and re initiate the backup @ Low I/O usage.

o   Error: Backup snapshot already exists

o   Solution: VCB Backup snapshot already exist, VM machines can have only one VCB Snapshot. Delete the older VCB Snapshot and re initiate backup.

o   Error: Other error encountered: Snapshot creation failed: Could not quiesce file system

o   Solution: VCB not able to quiesce the file system to create snapshot, try the re initiating backup after some time.

o   Error: Failed to export the disk: There is not enough space on the disk

o   Solution: Not enough space left to load the VM files in Mount Point. Re try backup after gaining necessary space.

o   Error: Snapshot creation failed: System error

o   Solution: VCB System internal Error, re try initiating backup after some time.

o   Error: Could not find virtual machine specified by name

o   Solution: VCB could not find the requested VM in ESX, Verify that VM Available in ESX and configured with Correct name in the Policy.

o   Error: Invalid user name or password

o   Solution:  Check the VC or ESX Login Credentials under Media and Device management->Credentials->Virtual Machine Servers

I hope this will help something !

Thanks, Karthikeyan Sundaram.

Can you confirm that you can

Can you confirm that you can perform a fullvm snapshot to the staging area using vcbmounter command on the Proxy server before using NetBackup.

See the following

Backing Up VMware with Veritas NetBackup | George Winter | January 2009

On Page 17

• Once a VMware Consolidated Backup snapshot is created, data is transferred from the VM
datastore to the backup proxy mount point. The completion speed of the snapshot process can
be significantly enhanced if care is made to ensure that the data path from the datastore to the
snapshot mount point (that is, staging area) is as fast as possible. The snapshot mount point
should be configured over as many dedicated spindles as possible. While we recommend that the
snapshot mount point be configured as fast disk, it does not need to be highly available. The
snapshot mount point is only used temporarily during the backup process and is not a permanent
repository of backed up data. The vcbMounter.exe command can be used to perform snapshot
creation and transfer performance tests. This can be done by invoking the vcbMounter.exe
command from the backup proxy. For example, if you wanted to test the snapshot throughput rate
of a VM named vm100.veritas.com to a backup proxy named proxy1.veritas.com, you would run
the vcbMounter.exe command from the backup proxy as follows:

vcbMounter.exe  -h esx1.veritas.com  –u root  -p foobar  -a
ipaddr:vm100.veritas.com   -r d:\mnt\vm100.veritas.com  -t fullvm

VMware Credentials you probably defined in netbackup:
-u User account on the VirtualCenter Server or ESX Host
-p password for the above user account

Once this works you can look into issues at the NetBackup side.

Tip: Get overview/document your NBU environment. Run 'nbsu' and review the output.
