Netbackup 7.5 - How can I limit 1 tape per policy

Created: 09 Dec 2012 | 4 comments

Hi Guys,

I need your help here. How can i limit a policy to use only 1 tape at a time? At the moment, i noticed my NBU is utilizing alot of tapes per policy, which i think is a waste.

Thanks in advance.

1) You can set Max jobs per policy to 1. But this would slow down your backups.

2) You can tweak Multiplexing settings to limit NBU to use one tape per policy at a time.

Have a look here:

You are not giving us any info about your environment?
How many clients in each policy?
How many streams are generated by each policy?
How many tape drives in the robot?
Multiplexing value in Storage Unit?
Multiplexing value in Policy Schedules?
Max Jobs per Client Setting?

Without information all we can do is guess...

My guess is that you don't have Multiplexing enabled.
As a start, increase Multiplex number to 4 in Storage Unit properties.
Increase MPX in all schedules to 4.

Please read up on the following topics in NBU Admin Guide I:

Limit jobs per policy (policy attribute)

Media multiplexing (schedule attribute)

Example of using multiplexing with schedules

Hope this helps!

Netbackup sort backups by retentions (this is likely what you are seeing). Weekly backup on weekly tape, daily on daily etc etc. Trying to limit one policy to one tape is a fight you never will win because Netbackup isn't designed for this

Just let Netbackup do it's job - in the end all tapes will be filled 100%.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

I agree 100% with Nicolai.

But ...  if you really want to do it, this might get you close.

Have a different volume pool per policy and limit the volume pool to max partially full volumes to 1.
