Netbackup 7.5 for Vmware Infrastructure

Created: 14 Aug 2012 | 5 comments

Hello!

We have FC SAN, IBM BladeCenter, IBM Storwize, six Vmware Vsphere 5 hosts, 30 Windows guests in production.

Our general manager just bought  SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE SERVER 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 and IBM TS3200 tape library for backup virtual machine data.

Questions are:

1) Is this Symantec software compatible with Vmware5 infrastructure? Or Netbackup for Vmware is a separate product?

2) Is it possible to install Media Server and other Netbackup components on virtual Machine with tape library mapped to it? Is it supportable configuration?

Thanks

Symantec NetBackup 7.5 supports vSphere 5 infrastructure. It understands the VMwares vstorage API.

NetBackup for Vmware is not a separate product. Just that licenses open up the product to using components that can be used to protect your data in these environments.

Tape library support on virtual hardware is not supported.

You can use disk to store backup images on through a Media Server. But consider impact on ESX host resources.

You require also ENTERPRISE CLIENT LICENSE per ESX Host for protecting your Virtual Machines through NetBackup.

However, suggest two resources:

DOCUMENTATION: Support for NetBackup 7.x in virtual environments (updated May 31, 2012).

Symantec NetBackup for VMware 7.5 Administrator's Guide

From your information, I would probably make your NetBackup Master server your VMware Backup Host too. From 7.5.0.3 you can use Linux as a VMware Backup Host - selective versions however, so see docs) Otherwise you would have master as Windows OS.

Tip: Get overview/document your NBU environment. Run 'nbsu' and review the output.

Stuart, thanks for the answer.

Whole license specification is:

SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE SERVER 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 2 STD LIC REWARDS BAND E Symantec  xxxxxxxx-xxxxx Quantity   1
SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE CLIENT 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 2 STD LIC REWARDS BAND E  Symantec xxxxxxxx-xxxxx Quantity   11
SYMC NETBACKUP CLIENT APPLICATION AND DATABASE PACK 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 2 STD LIC REWARDS BAND E Symantec xxxxxxxx-xxxxx Quantity   7
SYMC NETBACKUP OPTION LIBRARY BASED TAPE DRIVE 7.5 XPLAT PER DRIVE STD LIC REWARDS BAND E Symantec xxxxxxxx-xxxxx Quantity   2

There is no NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE CLIENT 7.5 for Vmware.  So I can't Vmware backup features.

1. Maybe solution is to install Windows Client on each guest and backup it like physical servers?

2. We have no physical hardware for media server. I guess that media server for tape backup unsupported but working. That is right?

@Fram I have editted your post. Not a good idea to put any type of valid product serial numbers or license keys on any public forum!

Andy, it was a Product Part Number, not a serial number

I really do apologise! Looked distinctly like a serial number to me
