Hi All,

We are running Netbackup version 7.5.0.4 and are planning to introduce dedup in our environment .We are also doing Vmware blib backups and will be testing dedup on them first .We are backing up around 500+ vm machines using Vstorage api on vsphere 5.0 .

We have allocated disk storage on one ouf our windows media server for testing dedup backups .Media server has 72G ram and 8 core processor ,4G backup nic.So can anybody let me know that should be used Media server deduplication or Client Dedup for vmware backups.....?

Have read somewhere that NetBackup Client Deduplication is a solution for Virtual machine backups but not able to find any docs supporting this or

any valueable points. Also on a lot of VM machines we dont have Netbackup client software installed .

Regards,

Abhishek

Also we have maximum SAN datastores so zoning them on new dedup media server can increase backup speed more and using Vmware SAN transport in policy...

DeDupe doesn't work in agentless state. You have to install install on Client. It would less footprint which would be utilized compared to regular client processes. But client must be present along with VMware Tools installed on each guest you cover under backup policy.

With Vmware virtual machine yuo should get max dedupe ratio. Even in 1st run too

For more details. Refer limitations and DeDupe part in Vmware Admin guide.

 Cheers !!!

If you backup via the LAN then de-dupe will only assist in terms of space the backups take up - all the data still comes over the LAN

If you backup over the SAN to your Media Server then all of the data still goes over the SAN (no big issue as compared to LAN backups) and the data gets de-duped at the Media Server.

So if you want to make best use of de-dupe in a virtual environment do the backups via the SAN

There are other ways (hot add with client side de-dupe, a VMWare backup host that is not a media server, again using client side de-dupe) but you best method will be SAN based backups directly to the Media Server

Hope this helps
