netbackup media server deduplication

Created: 12 Feb 2013 • Updated: 15 Feb 2013 | 16 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

Figure: NetBackup media server deduplication shows NetBackup media server deduplication. The deduplication storage server is a media server on which the deduplication core components are enabled. The storage destination is a Media Server Deduplication Pool.

The NetBackup Media Server Deduplication Option exists in the Symantec OpenStorage framework. A storage server writes data to the storage and reads data from the storage; the storage server must be a NetBackup media server.

This also resides on the media server?

We have told you before: Do not confuse MSDP (Media Server dedupe) with your Data Domain.

Need I give you URLs where we told you this?

Neither MSDP nor Data Domain are NetBackup Appliances (where you have posted this thread).

I have never seen the term CSDP other than used by you: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/what-basic-use-data-domain#comment-6764321

1.3rd-party applicance such as Data Domain? i got it

2.NBU Media Server Deduplication?

3.NBU Appliances?

I am not able to understand 2 and 3.

.NBU Media Server Deduplication :It is netbackup own deduplication?

What is this NBU appliance? This is not data domain nor MSDP?

I was saying to you that you have posted in the wrong forum.

This forum is for NBU appliances ( http://www.symantec.com/backup-appliance )

If you have general dedupe questions (such as MSDP or 3rd party dedupe appliance), you should post in NetBackup forum.

Arun,

Yes MSDP and A PDDO device like a 5020 use the same deduplication technology when it comes to deduplication. You issue the same commands to manage it. However the Appliance has processes and controls built in that manage it for you while you will need to build those controls yourself if you have an MSDP.

A 5220 appliances is a Master (If you want), Media server rolled intot one you can have any amount of the disk in it be placed into an MSDP

The above comments are not to be construed as an official stance of the company I work for; hell half the time they are not even an official stance for me.

NetBackup provides two deduplication products:
  • Symantec NetBackup PureDisk is a product that provides a complete backup and deduplication environment. It can be used as a stand-alone (PureDisk writes data to the storage pools) or as a back-end for NetBackup.
  • NetBackup 7.0 and later delivers deduplication integrated into NetBackup at the media server and supports a dedicated deduplication pool called a Media Server Deduplication Pool (MSDP).

I got all my queries.ust reply to below 2:

For 2 point,I need to have pure disk or advanced disk?

So netbackup has inbuilt deduplictaion feature wjich is called as MSDP?

NBU appliances is a 3rd party tool?

Andrew Madsen's picture

Yes on the MSDP and no on the appliance. Symantec is in the hardware manufacturing business.

Pure disk. In a media server PureDisk is called an MSDP

   Yes

NBU appliances is a 3rd party tool?

No NBU Appliance is Symantec's own manufactured equipmant Sold and supported by Symantec.
