This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi I configured an netbackup RMAN backup in the oracle 10g database running on solaris 10.The master is netbackup 7 running on RHEL 5.5. I am able to trigger a backup from the client(database server) using a template. but i am unable to trigger the same from the master server. I get the following error message.

the backup failed to back up the requested files(6).

How can we keep track of the tapes to which the rman dump has been written.  The bplist command as listed in the administration guide doesnot provide any information.

Whether the restoration of the database can be done using the backup archive and restore utility.

Regards,

Giri

Have a look at the troubleshooting section of the Oracle agent backup manual, it'll tell you to create some log dirs and to rerun. That'll help you resolve your error 6 problems and it covers recovery in there too. You may need a DBA.

As for RMAN, you need that for recovery. I do an rman export every day with a pre-script or you can do it with cron (or...) . Write the export to disk, back it up to tape, say, then overwrite or keep n, again using the pre/post script options for backup to manage it.

You need your RMAN db active rman to backup and recover under BC conditions, you need to restore RMAN under DR conditions.

If the backup is started from the client, the 'Backup selection' in the policy is ignored.

Please double-check the selection in the policy.

Extract from manual:

"In a database policy, you specify templates or scripts to be run.
.....
Note that templates do not reside on the clients. Templates reside on the NetBackup master server. "

Also:

To add a template to the backup selections list from the Java interface
1 Open the Policy dialog box.
To access the Policy dialog box, double-click the policy name in the Policies list in the NetBackup Administration Console.
2 Click the Backup Selections tab.
3 Click New.
4 From the Template Set list, choose the template type by operation.
5 From the Script or Template list, select a template or type the name of a template.
Include the .tpl extension. Do not include the full path. For example,
weekly_full_backup.tpl.
6 Click Add to add the template to the list.
7 Click OK.

Just to check: You need to incluid the netbackup User Account on Windows Backup  and ORA_DBA Group.

If this dont work, please review the TPL, check password, policy and schedule on TPL file.

Please MARK AS SOLUTION If my Post Help You. I use the following Symantec Products: Veritas Netbackup 7.5 On Windows Enterprise 2003 SP2 - / - Symantec EndPoint 12.1.100.157 RU1 On Windows Standard 2003 SP2 - / - Symantec&nb

Also check If the files are reside on the same location what the policy are looking for.

Remember: TPL files reside on the master server.

How can we keep track of the tapes to which the rman dump has been written.

We create an Oracle volume pool and setup the policy to use that pool.

Hi all,

I customised the sample script available with Netbackup since the templates are not flexible and may cause problems . This was conveyed to me by Symantec support and now I am using scripts and the job runs fine.
