Error states that you want to

Error states that you want to install patch on master / media server.

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/315028.htm

1. Down the NB CLT Patch  and NB Server Patch (Depending on your OS) and JAVA for UNIX Patch

2. Extract both patches in same folder

3. Run the NB_update.install

You will also need to patches for other options like - Vault, BMR, etc.

Suggestion - I would recommend you to go for 6.5.5 patch instead of 6.5.3.

Hope this resolves your problem

odd

maybe  the presence of 6.5.3 and 6.5.3.1 confuses the patch installation process. But you really should consider to upgrade to 6.5.5 instead.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

If this post solved you’re questions please send a gratitude by marking it as a solution.

You're probably right there Nicolai

from the List of links to the NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.5.3 Hotfix 1 (6.5.3.1) downloads it states:

"...
The NetBackup 6.5.3 Release Update is required to be installed before applying the 6.5.3.1 Hotfix
..."

so if you really must go to 6.5.3.1 & no higher, try installing all the required patches for 6.5.3 before trying to apply the 6.5.3.1 hotfix patches.

***EDIT***
I know that was essentially what you were trying to do but as Nicolai states having all the patches there together could well be confusing the issue.

6.5.3.1

The 6.5.3.1 patch was "ooouuchh - we did a code dodo" type of patch ;)

And I can recall Symantec needed to correct the patch installation script to handle sub releases, not sure it was in 6.5.3.1 (but likely)

From the 6.5.3.1 release notes

-- Installation of this Hotfix requires version 1.6.4.14.4.3 of the
NB_update.install script.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

If this post solved you’re questions please send a gratitude by marking it as a solution.

Think every release has a different version

of NB_update.install. (e.g. 1.6.4.14.4.2 for 6.5.3)

So that will confirm what we are all saying - do the upgrades separately.

I agree with Nicolai and Andy

I agree with Nicolai and Andy - copy the 6.5.3 patches to a different folder and install that first. That would be:
NB_6.5.3.solaris_314587.tar
NB_CLT_6.5.3_314595.tar
NB_JAV_6.5.3_314600.tar
NB_BMR_6.5.3_314594.tar
NB_VLT_6.5.3_314610.tar

Any particular reason why you want to install 6.5.3 specifically and not 6.5.5?
Also confirm that the O/S that you are installing is Solaris SPARC.  Solaris x86 has separate patches.

Supporting Storage Foundation and VCS on Unix and Windows as well as NetBackup on Unix and Windows.

I can honestly not remember

I can honestly not remember any special requirements for 6.5.5.
Always good to read documentation before installing. All 6.5.5 documentation and patches can be found here: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/337041.htm

Extract:
6.5.5 Readme Information:
For additional information about new platform proliferations, new features associated with this release, end-of-life notifications, known issues, and the current Release Update content, refer to the following TechNote:
 http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/334986

About your 6.5.3 unexpected EOF error - unfortunately the download link does note state the file size. That makes it difficult to confirm that the downloaded file size is correct. I have experienced similar errors myself, but it was due to incomplete download...

Going to 6.5.4 or 6.5.5 at

Going to 6.5.4 or 6.5.5 at very least is highly recommended.  We change the way the resource broker works in 6.5.4.  Just make sure you are extracting all of the files into the same directory.  6.5.5 is more feature type update. 6.5.4 is a major overhaul.
