Netbackup upgrde from 6.5 to 7 on Oracle Solaris 10
Hi All,
I am going for another upgradation of Netbackup 6.5 to 7.
The old master /media server(i.e. Netbackup 6.0 MP4) have the paltform of Suse Linux 9, and taking the backup of database on solaris platform. Database were all in SAN storage.
Now, the customer is providing a new hardware and with the following OS :-
OS - Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 s10x_u9wos_14a X86
Patch-level - SunOS htbkpsrv 5.10 Generic_142910-17 i86pc i386 i86pc
Tape drives :- Fujistu Tape Librery LT270.
I am planning to upgrade the Netbackup 6.0 to 7 as follows:-
1. Backup the catalog of the old server with a hot catalog policy.
2. Configure the new server with same Host name and IP.
3. Install the Netbackup 6.0 MP4 in the new server with all required tape and NAS configuration.
4. Export the catalog database in the new server and check the consistancy alon with NBCC check.
5. Upgrade the Netbackup 6.0 to 7 and check for the catalog consistancy and NBCC.
My query were as follows:-
1. Will the upgrade will go smooth fo Solaris 10 from Suse Linux 9 platform. Or I need to take care for something.
2. Does Solaris 9 support the support the catalog database from suse Linux 9.
3. Is there any caution need to be followed while upgrade process.
4. Any thing else need to taken care fro tape drives.
Thanks.
With Regards,
Mrinal Sarkar

I don't understand this question:
"Does Solaris 9 support the support the catalog database from suse Linux 9."
Where does Solaris 9 fit in the picture? Only Solaris 10 is supported on x86-64 platform.
For Device Configuration, see Device Config Guide. If tapes from old library needs to be restored, you need to check compatibility with the relevant hardware vendors.

Yes you were right...
ooops....I am sorry.
I have missed typed that it should be solaris 10.
So that Line will be as follows:-
"My query were as follows:-
1.....
2. Does Solaris 10 support the catalog database from suse Linux 9.
3. ...."
Thanks.

Regarding Devices ...
Hi,
As per the device check.
I need to add another step for this device check in the Solaris 10.
Just for an review the steps were :-
1. Backup the catalog of the old server with a hot catalog policy.
2. Check the device support (for Tape Dives and NAS storage.).
2. Configure the new server with same Host name and IP.
3. Install the Netbackup 6.0 MP4 in the new server with all required tape and NAS configuration. Command to check the devices:-
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan utility
4. Export the catalog database in the new server and check the consistancy alon with NBCC check.
5. Upgrade the Netbackup 6.0 to 7 and check for the catalog consistancy and NBCC.
Please correct me , where it need to be..
Thanks.

Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh
There is no "Export the catalog database". You need to do a catalog recovery.
Read the entire TN and then follow the step-by-step process that you can find under this heading:
The following procedure should be used when replacing hardware:

Solaris x64 Master server support starts with NetBackup 6.5
It seems like the migration is from a Linux platform to a Solaris Intel Platform.
I would upgrade the old server to at least NetBackup 6.5 and then install NetBackup 6.5 on the new server and then perform the catalog recovery on the new server.
If the old master server is running a 32-bit Linux Operating System, it won't be compatible with NetBackup 7.0, which only supports 64-bit Linux.
Migrating the NetBackup database from one platform type to a different platform type usually requires NetBackup professional services to perform the migration.
Thanks....
Thanks for the support to all................
The old server is a 32 bit Suse Linux, where catalog database can not be upgraded to new Solaris 10(64bit) for Netbackup 7.0.
Thus , we were going for a fresh installation and configuration.
We have'nt tried any professional way of convertation of those database.
We have decided that it is rather a best option for a fresh installation in the new server, with all 120 policy and near about 16 Media Volumes for tapes and other configuration in the client side.
We have updated those 32 bit unix and linux server to 6.5 and was fine in takung backups.
Thanks to all.

Why can you not follow these
Why can you not follow these steps as suggested by Reagan?
"I would upgrade the old server to at least NetBackup 6.5 and then install NetBackup 6.5 on the new server and then perform the catalog recovery on the new server."
I'm battling to understand this statement:
"...fresh installation in the new server, with all 120 policy and near about 16 Media Volumes for tapes and other configuration in the client side."
What are you plans with existing media, images, policies, etc?

For the existing images.............
Hi,
Right, there may be some problem in the existing images, backup..etc., as we 'll not get those data.
But the customer only intrested in backup of last 15 days data and they will continue to keep the old server(just stopping the services) and their tapes, if require we can restore the data incase required.
As I am bit confisued about the NBU 6.0 on SUSE linux (32 bit ) to newly Oracle Solaris 10(64bit) for NBU 7 supprt issue of database, thus taken this step.
So, without taking any risk we have decided to go for fresh installation.
Thanks.

Seems as if we all keep on
Seems as if we all keep on misunderstanding one another...
What we are suggesting:
1. Upgrade the Linux Master to 6.5. Do a hot catalog backup.
2. Install 6.5 on Solaris 10 (x64) server. Do a catalog recovery (as per the TN mentioned above).
3. Upgrade NBU on Solaris server to 7.0.
If you feel that these are too many steps and that something might go wrong because of all the steps, by all means - go ahead with a new installation.
If you are going to use the same tape library, just remember to remove all tapes that contain backups out of the robot to eliminate the risk of the tapes being overwritten.

I can understand..
Hi,
I can understand that the steps above is fine. And I am ready to go for it and I guess I 'll not miss any steps neither.
What my confusion is the old Server (SUSE Linux) is a 32 Bit and the new server is a 64 Bit Solaris. Does both of these servers database will be compatable with each other.
As Reagan have pointed out
"If the old master server is running a 32-bit Linux Operating System, it won't be compatible with NetBackup 7.0, which only supports 64-bit Linux. "
That was my concern, other wise I have no problem for the upgradation from 6.0 then to 6.5 and then to 7.0.
Thanks.

As per your steps...
Hi,
To be more specific let see the steps as told by Marianne:-
1. Upgrade the Linux Master to 6.5. Do a hot catalog backup.
[Over here the OS is a 32 Bit]
2. Install 6.5 on Solaris 10 (x64) server.
[Now the OS is a 64 bit, does the previous database will support in this OS or NBU 6.5]
Do a catalog recovery (as per the TN mentioned above).
3. Upgrade NBU on Solaris server to 7.0.
Thanks.

That is absolutely correct.
That is absolutely correct. If you look at the steps listed above, you will see that at no stage is NBU 7 installation/upgrade attempted on 32-bit Linux. NBU 6.5 is the last version on Linux. From there you move over to the Solaris server.
Your concern is addressed in TN http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448
Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh
It explains how to use catalog backup and recovery to upgrade from 32-bit hardware to 64-bit hardware. Extract:
"It is sometimes necessary for a customer to replace the hardware they use for their master server. For example they may need to replace a 32 bit master server with a newer model 64 bit master server."
