  • 1.  Netshare - cannot open pdf documents on server

    Posted Apr 11, 2013 10:21 AM

Migrated from Windows XP 32-bit computer with PGP 10.2.0 (Build 1672) WDE & NetShare to Windows 7 64-bit with PGP 10.2.1 MP 5 (build 5033).

no problems on WDE opening of pdf files on computer hard drive.  on server with NetShare all files open ok except for pdf files.  when attempting to open a pdf file, i get the message:

"Acrobat could not open '*Document Name*' becasue it's either not a supported file type or becasue the file has been damaged (for example,it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

i disabled Enhanced Security in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat X as suggested in one forum discussion to no avail.

i can decrypt the server folder that contains pdf files and open any pdf file without any problem.  when i then encrypt again the same folder, i get the same error message stated above and cannot open pdf files.

i have "unlocked" he file with pgp via file properties, pgp tab; get the pop up that pgp has unlocked the file and still get the same Adobe error message stated above.

i can open excel, word and other documents that are encrypted on the server without any problems.

has anyone experienced the same problem and found a solution?

    thanks.

This is known to sometimes occur if the NetShare protected pdf is already opened on another PC.

    Tom,

thanks for your reply.  i am positive no other user/computer has the pdf file open.  i attempted to open multiple pdf's to no avail early this morning and no one else was on the server.

On the thought that it might be tied to Windows 7 permissions (I modified some earlier), i did a complete factory recovery on the laptop, reinstalled the other software including pgp PGP 10.2.1 MP 5 (build 5033).

I still have the same situation where a pdf only, encrypted by NetShare, will not open in either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat X.  I get the same error message as stated in the original report above.

If i decrypt the file using pgp it opens without a problem.

I am positive no one else was using the server/share folder as i did it during off times and also restricted anyone else from accessing the share folder where the pdfs were located.  other files microsoft work, excel, etc will open when in the NetShare encrypted state.

    I am stumped...

I'm puzzled as well, but am wondering if this problem would remain if you updated your PGP version.  It might be worth trying the current Trial.  If it is a PGP problem, there may be an improvement in 10.3 that resolves it.

Are you hosting the files on a Windows Server with Symantec File Share Encryption (formerly PGP Netshare) installed on the Windows Server? Doing so can cause unexpected behavior sometimes, this is one of the compatiblity issues I have seen reported in using this type of setup. It is generally recommend that you install Symantec File Share encryption on the Windows client PC's only.
