    Hi,

I've just installed a fresh XP system with pgp desktop 10.1.2 and i'm unable to decrypt or encrypt a folder with pgp netshare. The task says it has finished and the folder has been added to pgp netshare, but it clearly isn't doing anything to the file/folder in question.

However I can access existing folders without a problem.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

What are you expecting to see that you are not seeing?

When you have a NetShare encrypted folder, and place a file in it, it is transparently encrypted; when you open a file from that folder, it is transparently decrypted.  I'm not sure regarding any files that might have been in the folder at the time of encryption.  I'm not really into NetShare, but the only thing I can think of that you might be able to see, is that if your do not have your key's passphrase cached when first accessing a file in that folder, it would seem that you would have to be prompted for the passphrase.

I'm not seeing that any changes are made to the state of the folder.

For example if I decrypt a folder thats already encrypted it runs through the wizzard and says finished. After this stage the data is still left encrypted which obviously should not be the case.

Just to make sure, when you remove the NetShare protection, and your key's passphrase is not cached, and you access a file from that folder, you are not able to use the file when accessed from its associated application (and you are probably instead prompted for your key's passphrase)?

If I remove pgp netshare protection from a folder it should decrypt all the files within the folder & obviously the folder itself. Then if i try to access these files from a system without PGP i should be able to view the files in their original form....however this isn't the case and the files are still left encrypted.

Thanks for the clarification.  I don't know if removing the NetShare protection from a folder should decrypt the files in that folder, and hope someone else here can clarify.  The reason I think it may not, is that when a user accesses a file in a NetShare protected folder, it is transmitted to that user's machine (if this is from a server or other user's machine) in its encrypted state, and is then decrypted on the local machine by that user's private key.  The NetShare protected folder itself is not actually encrypted; if a non-NetShare authorized user of that folder places a file in it, it will not be encrypted.

Just to clarify the netshare folder is encrypted because if you access the contents of the machine from a system without PGP netshare the data is unreadable.

I have however now resolved the problem. The issue seems to be with PGP 10.1 & 10.1.2 ... I’ve reverted to 10.0.xx and I no longer have the issue.

    Thanks
