Network card issue with ghost

kingm026@medway.org.uk's picture

Hi all,

I recently purchase a large amount of new HP laptops for our school teachers; however i seem to be having a problem ghosting them.

The laptop: Hp6730s
network card: Marvell Yukon gig

Outline:

I boot into WINPE with f12 select the correct boot at this point the network card is still active. After it has loaded the settings it changes to the loading screen and then the network card turns off!

I have researched about this problem and i have been told to add the drive to ghost boot wizard, which Im sure i have done correctly. However i still cannot get it to work.

Has any one come across this before with this driver?

Any ideas on how to fix this

many thanks

When you boot to Winpe please

When you boot to Winpe please type ipconfig /all on command prompt and see whether or not your NIC driver has started. Also check wpeinit.log - this will contain information about any boot activity done by Winpe, including your NIC.

Hi Matt, 1. Go to Ghost Boot

Hi Matt,

1. Go to Ghost Boot Wizard and select pc-dos pre-os.  Click next.
2. Select network boot package, click next. You will see UNDI drivers selected. Click next.
3. Client type is Symantec ghost. Click next.
4. External storage support window. Click next.
5. Configure network settings. Click next.
6. Choose destination drive to store boot package.
7. Review page and click finish.

Boot the client machine (in your case laptop) with created package and see you can see network setting with the help of ipconfig command.

Regards,

Nitin

Can I just verify something?

Does F12 on the HP activate PXE boot? If so, then presumably at this point, the bios is handling initialisation of the network card so that it can get an IP address by DHCP from the network server running the remote boot stuff.

Once WinPE has loaded, it takes over the management of the network card, as I understand it. So the question is, does your WinPE configuration support the Marvell Yukon card?  If not, it is not that difficult to add the driver to your base wim file

1. Mount the wim file:
imagex /mountrw winpe.wim 1 c:\winpe_x86\mount\

2. Add the inf file to the base image - you will need the Marvell NIC drivers in a folder:
peimg /inf=<path to inf file in driver folder> c:\winpe_x86\mount\windows

You should get a successful completion message once the driver and support files have been installed in the wim image

3. Save the updated wim file
imagex /unmount /commit c:\winpe_x86\mount

If your issue has been solved, please use the "Mark as Solution" link on the most relevant thread.

Hi EdT Thanks alot for

Hi EdT

Thanks alot for getting back to me.

I normally change the boot order in the bios, to boot from the network card. Then it gets an IP etc :) (Or some of the hp's i have found, to hit F12 and i can change the order)

Im not to great on the workings of ghost. So im not sure if the WINPE conifg supports the marvell yukon card.

I have tried to add the marvell yukon driver within ghost boot wizard. (edit Winpe, add driver). However still no joy!

With regards to add the driver to the bas driver. I really don;t know where to start.

3. Save the updated wim file
imagex /unmount /commit c:\winpe_x86\mount"

Im not even to sure on how i do the above.. Any more pointers? :)

Sorry for asking so many questions

kind reagrds

Try this

1. Run Live update 3 times and pull of three Live updates. Your ghost32.exe will be of build 2165 and other components will get updated as well.
2. Make sure that Winpe has proper NIC driver installed. Go to Ghost boot wizard and check that manually.
3. Driver has to be Vista-based not XP-based. Download the latest Vista-based driver from manufacture website and installing it to Ghost database and Winpe in case you need it later.

Please let us know the results once you do it.

Hi Nitin,

Still no joy; i must be doing something wrong!

This is how i have been doing it.

The Driver on the laptop is an XP driver

I am downloading this driver for the Symantec ghost boot wizard. http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dr... - Windows Vista

The download is saved on the server desktop.

Load up Symantec boot wizard

Type Windows PE (default)

Edit

select winpe

Click edit

Add New Driver

Browse to VISTA driver on desktop

Give the file a friendly name (I have put in Marvell_Yukon_Driver) Or does it have to be something else?

Tick the OS (Vista)

Click ok

then it installs the driver

Then i try it on the laptop and the network card still turns off after loading the settings

RIS drivers

Hi Matt,

Please try and download the RIS drivers from the above mentioned website. Hopefully it should solve your problem. Also select other Marvell driver from the drivers list in winpe through ghost boot wizard.
