  • 1.  Network config issue after setting NTP host

I have begun configuring my 8340 SBG. Version 9.0.2. I am using a single NIC with a single IP and port. I completed the setup wizard without issue.

My next step was to enter a NTP server as I had decided to use us.pool.ntp.org. I went to the proper page (can't see it now to tell you what it is) and entered the NTP host and clicked apply. My https session never came back. I connected to the console and rebooted. I still can't connect to the console, which makes sense considering I am getting a network interface error during bootup. It reads like this:

    bringing up loopback interface

starting symantec brightmail gateway osconfig: Failed to create default route... SIOCSIFFLAGS: cannon assign requested address... [this repeats a bunch of times] ...RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable.

    Failed

It would appear that my network configuration reset/cleared/messed up itself when I hit apply. I say that because my IP info was on the same page. When I do an IFCONFIG at the command line I see my IP address, subnet and broadcast. Where is the gateway???

Any ideas would be really helpful. I will probably delete -osconfig and start over. But I would hate to get this thing in production, decide to change a DNS entry and find the network config reset/clear/mess up itself. That would cause a mail outage, of course.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi paul,

When you run the ifconfig -a it does not list the gateway.  Does it give a MAC address or is it listed as all zeros?

Yes. My eth0 has a HWaddr. It is not all zeros. The server was working prior to my setting an NTP server.

How do I list my gateway with the ifconfig command?

    Thanks,

In order to solve this I connected to the console and:

    delete osconfig

This command removes the OS configuration. It keeps policies, license and password. But it then restarts and asks you the original setup questions: IP, subnet, DNS, gateway, scanner and control center, etc.

After this I could connect again. As a test, I updated the host configuration (from the GUI of course) again, with an additional NTP server. And, voila, gone!

At the console I can ping my gateway and myself, but not another subnet. It appears to have lost its' gateway again. This would appear to be a bug.

Do I have to "delete osconfig" again to fix my network settings??? Has anyone else experienced this with 9.0.2? I am using a single IP.

    Thanks

    Paul
