Network Drive Mapping using Altiris 7.1

Created: 13 Mar 2012 | 5 comments

Hi,

We’ve just installed Altiris 7.1 in our enterprise. I have a simple question (sorry if I sound stupid but consider it that I am new to Altiris 7.1),

In Altiris 6.9 when we are creating the WinPE image we have the option for Network Drive mapping, which we were using to allow support staff for browsing the shared folder and then launch ghost from there and browse for images and deploy.

I am struggling to find similar way in Altiris 7.1.

What our support staff wanted to achieve is that, when they boot a computer by using PXE they should able to browse a network mapped drive and launch ghost from there and select the image.

Can someone please help me regarding this?

Regards,

Hi tayyabsh

DS 7.1 does not automatically map drive like DS 6.9 does.

Therefore you have two options.

Option 1: Download Samples from http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO44396 this includes a task which maps a drive...

Option 2: Use the following Artikel https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-securely-map-drive-winpe-deployment-server-71

Hope this answers your question

Hi Tayabsh,

Loginw.exe is located in at the following location c:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\bootwiz\Platforms\Winpe2\x86\Optional\Boot on your NS Server (if C:\ is your install drive)

You might want to rethink imaging from a central management perspective.  In 7.1, it's based heavily around central management and the Symantec Management Console.  Ideally, deployment techs would assign an imaging job to a computer, not browse from a bare metal computer that's booted in WinPE to navigate a menu or browse a folder structure in order to execute a command line.  I know there's often some good history to why it's been set up this way in a given environment, but it sounds a little bit like saying, regarding software, "We need our technicians to be able to easily find the .bat file when they visit a computer so they can install software."

Are you sure assigning an image job from the Console is not an option?

Hi mclemson,

I am totally agree with you, but the problem is that our suport staff was using ghost before, when we bring altiris 6.9 initially we forced them to use the console and drop the jobs and it was a huge issue on that time.anyways after a lot of discussion and objections we used the ability of altiris 6.9 and mapped the network drive for them to load ghost.

Again with this new reales of 7.1 we tried to force them for using console but..... so the thing is we cannot use the droping option.

(you probably will think that why we are forced to go according to the support staff....this I can't answer..but I really have no choice.)
