When I run this job I  the "Prepare for Image Capture" runs without a problem. The "Create Image" task starts (via RDeploy) and does it's thing as expected. Once it hits 100% on the capture, the RDeploy windows shuts and the computer sits at the Automation screen until manually rebooted.

When I look at the job, it says the task failed with "An unknown exception was thrown" error. Clicking on the raw exception message link reveals this..

Does anyone have an idea what may be causing this? I am currently trying to use Ghost to capture the image to see if the results are different.

    Extra Info if needed:

    DS 7.1

    Client - XP Pro SP3 x86

    Automation Folders used

    Disk Image via Rdeploy

    Image files created in D:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\Task Handler\image\<GUID>

    Thanks.

Can you try using Ghost. Is there anything in particular you are looking in Rdeploy Image.

    Hello,

Can you please attach rdeploy log from client? And what is the DS build number that you are using?

    Thanks,

    Sachin

I did try Ghost as well, but it took 52 minutes to get to the same error. We image multiple computers at a time and need to be able to multicast. I've read and heard Ghost won't do that.

I have searched the entire drive of the client for anything related to rdeploy and found nothing.

    Build number is 7.1.1895

    Take a look at this:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH164467

We have a known issue where BCDEdit causes issues with Ghost, but I did look at your job and it's missing the BCDEdit for when using RDeploy.  Per the documentation, we do need that for using RDeploy, but not Ghost.  That KB spells it out pretty well.

Try adding that step, and see if maybe it fixes it?

    Just a thought.

Thanks, but I am trying to create an image of XP Pro when there is only 1 partition. I will try it, but could you let me know at where in the job this task should be?

    You're right.

It's a little confusing, but the RDeploy logs are on the server in the same folder (or subfolder - I always forget) that RDeploy runs from.  Just like in DS 6.9 days.

I forget when we added Multicast to Ghost, but if you're on SMP 7.1, I know it's there at least.

A remote session with Support can do a LOT for fixing something like this quickly.  I really think that, if you're still having issues, you NEED a call opened with support.

That said, I posted a few more comments above.  Here's a synopsis.

    1) Ghost does support Multicast now.  RDeploy is depricated, so please use Ghost if you can.

    2) RDeploy logs are on the server and Ghost logs are on the client when you get errors.  Be sure to search the right location when troubleshooting.

    3) Don't use BCDEdit when imaging XP.  My bad.

    4) (new) Be sure to try once with Ghost and with the option to use DeployAnywhere not selected.  Even if you know you will be needing DeployAnywhere, try once without it, just to be sure that's not the culprit.  We've had issues with it in the past.  One solution, if that works, is to run DA manually.  My sample jobs (top fo the DS forum) include a script for running DA manually, for precisely this reason.

    Happy hunting friends!

i beleive if you imaging job fails at last moment, then there might be some problem with network.

Are you using vmware workstation to test the product.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Got busy on another project and had to set this one aside. Still having this issue and it's looking like I'll be calling support.

    @Thomas -

    1. Thanks for the update. I have started using Ghost to try and capture and image.

    2. Will be looking on client for logs since support will probably want these as well.

    3. ;)

    4. Tried it every which way possible.

It has to have something to do with adding it as an Image Resource. The job will fail everytime in the same place whether it is RDeploy or Ghost and the image file is actually created. I am able to use the image import tool to add the image to Image Resources, but haven't tested a deployment to see if it really works. I am able to open the .gho file with Ghost Explorer and look through the hard drive, so that's a plus.

    Will keep all advised.

Have you checked to see if the image files have a GHO file extension? Just created a Windows 7 image and the same thing happened to me.

Found this article > http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH133410 and my image file is missing the file extension.

    Hope that helps,
