New to GSS 2.5...need help

  • 1.  New to GSS 2.5...need help

    Posted Jun 05, 2009 02:11 PM
We're currently running PowerQuest deploy center and would like to migrate over to GSS 2.5.  I was hoping someone can guide me towards the right direction to get started. Basically, we would like to use our current image (.PQI) with GSS 2.5 to restore a new computer.  The main thing would be to start creating new images using GSS 2.5 just to get familiar with the product.

Thinking of installing the product on Windows Server 2008 32bit virtual machine.  From what I read, you can create/restore images from the Ghost Console, is this correct????  How do I set up a PXE boot as well??  Do I need to DHCP onto the computer where GSS 2.5 will get installed or can I have it running on another server?

I would really like to follow the best practice guide for installing GSS 2.5.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    K

PXE runs independently from GSS server. You can install PXE on the same or different box. You can create/restore images as well as doing bunch of other useful activities from Console.

In the Console go to Remote client install under Tools and install client software on each client machine. You can install it manually as well from client.msi. Once client is installed new machines will start popping up in the Console. You can then start executing tasks on those machines - create/restore image, capture/restore user data, inventory etc.

You can also restore from your old PQI files but not create them. It should just work from the Console. Go to Tasks pane and create new image create task. Then create new image resource for it fro task properties dialog - pick image GHO or VMDK or PQI. Pick machine(s) to execute task on. Save and execute.

How do I restore the old PQI images from the Console??

I tried to create a new image CREATE task from the Ghost Console but it seems like it is creating an image of the current computer.

I already a .PQI image that has been syspreped.  How do I restore that from the console?

FYI,  I just re-installed the Ghost Console and re-install the client on a test pc.  No configurations were done.

If you want to restore then you do not want to create "new image create task", do you? You want to create new "clone" task. Create new task, check clone checkbox and then create new image resource and instead of GHO just pick PQI image. Select machine, save task and execute.

    Hi Eugene,

I tried the instruction that you have provided (You want to create new "clone" task. Create new task, check clone checkbox and then create new image resource and instead of GHO just pick PQI image. Select machine, save task and execute)

However, it fails when it gets to the Ghost32 11.5 Window.  I get the following error:

Are you running a trial build? If not then please run Live update to get three service packs downloaded and installed. If you are not then I think trial build has no restore function enabled.

I ran Live Update and installed the 3 service packs.

I clicked on my original task.
    1)  Under the general tab, only Clone is checked.  I selected the target  machine.
    2)  Under the network tab, nothing is checked.
    3)  Under the clone tab, it displays the target machine and one destination drive.  Displays the image that I have selected.  As for the image, I took our original PQI file.
    4)  I will Execute the task now.

I noticed the Symantec Ghostcase Server started up on the server.  I am also noticing the client going through different DOS command line screen then finally comes to the Ghost32 11.5 screen where it says "Attempting to contact session <SERVERpush4>

    Now it has failed again.

Could it be the image I am trying to restore?

    Error message:

Check that the GhostCasting Server application is ready
    to accept clients!

No, it is missing driver. If you would be using Winpe instead of DOS Console will tell you immediately what NIC driver is missing. Unfortunately we dont do driver validation for DOS preos but we do for Winpe.

    You have three options here:
    a) use Winpe and great chance that your driver is already installed. Otherwise you need to import Vista driver from manufacture to GSS database and inject it into Winpe using Winpe editor in Ghost boot wizard (GBW).
    b) download DOS driver for your NIC and import it to database via GBW again and then use that driver.
    c) try using UNDI driver instead of a specific one.

Can you please show me the steps on how to add the drivers?

I think I didn't follow the instructions properly.  I started GBW --> Selected Window PE --> Clicked Edit --> Select WinPE-512 --> Clicked Edit --> Clicked Add New Driver --> Added Broadcom.NetXtreme Gigabit drivers --> Clicked OK -->ClickedOK

Then I was back to the main screen but instead of proceeding, I hit cancel.  Was I suppose to hit Next and follow through?  If so, what do I do next?a

    Thanks,

    K

Hi I'm a new user on these forums.

I don't think this should be posted here, but it is somewhat related.

I have Ghost deployment center set up and the PXE boot is working fine. It's running on MS Windows Server 2003, I also have Ghost Cast Server set up, for imaging on the same Server.

    This is my issue.
I am using the Network Boot Image created by the Ghost Boot Wizard.
When I boot off this Image from USB on a client station, everything works flawlessly, both dumping an image to the server share, and deploying image onto a client.
However, when I network boot from the client, the PXE works fine, the Ghost 11.5 Interface loads properly, the Cast Session is identified correctly by the client station, but when I proceed to begin imaging I get the following error on the client station GhostCast Session failed with GhostCode 19903, and on the Server the response is "waiting for clients to connect"

What is the difference between running the GhostCast Session with booting off USB, and using the same boot image for PXE Boot?
Why is everything successfull in the one instance, and only partially successfully in the other (the failure being that the server doesn't recognise that the client is connected to the Cast Session).

    What am I doing wrong?
    PLEASE HELP!
