New Policies only run Full backups

Created: 15 May 2013 | 11 comments

Although Full and Differential schedules are defined, only the Full is running.

nbpemreq -predict only shows the next Full will run next week.

Deleted and recreated using the Create a Backup Policy wizard and same result.

Existing policies run Full and Differential schedules, no problem.

Please show us your policy config?

bppllist (policy-name) -U

Were any manual backups kicked off recently?

If they are new policies you need to run a full backup first, otherwise the incremental backups have no base line and will perform full backups everytime until a full backup has actually run

Initial Full backup completed successfully but nothing ran for several days afterwards when it should have run Differentials.  Policy config is all the defaults from the wizard: weekly Full, daily Differential.  Cannot post files as the system has no internet connection.  When I kicked off manual backup today it ran another Full.

Oh, and we are running NetBackup 7.1.0.3 on Linux master.  Backup clients are running same NBU version on Windows 2008.  Upgrade to 7.5.0.5 is planned but not yet approved.

update:

This is now happening on another site as well.  One site it's a SharePoint policy; other site is VMware Snapshot Policy.  I am running Manual backup now at both sites, explicitly selecting Differential schedule and it seems to run OK.

Only change I can think of is RedHat patch update a few weeks ago but cannot figure any possible tie-in to NetBackup scheduling.

OK, the Diffs are done and when I run nbpemreq -predict it now shows Differential.  Odd, maybe it will work tonight.  Will report back....

I totally believe that you have checked and double-checked policy config, but don't you want to PLEASE show us policy config for one of the problematic policies?

Sorry - I 'faded' last night...

First thing that I see is that Full schedule has frequency of every 7 days with open windows for every day - same as the Diff schedule.

So, when the backup window opens, both Full and Diff will be due.
If no previous Full has run in last 7 days, the Full will be submitted rather than Diff.

Do you really need window to be open every day for Full?

I would also reduce frequency for Diff - with open window of 11 hours, I would change frequency to every 12 hours to cater for schedule creeping and/or manual kick off.

Are you aware of David Chapa's article about Frequency scheduling?

We used to specify schedules like that years ago.  This is the 'new' default as provided by the wizard I think think since version 6 so we have run with it. At any rate, the Differentials did run last night so the problem seems to be resolved.  Not sure why we suddenly had issue when we've been creating policies this way for quite some time.

nbpemreq  correctly shows Differential due to run again tonight.  So that is good!

From what I can see in your policy config, NBU has always worked this way.
The logic works as I have explained above and in the article that I have referred to.
What you've seen was because Full and Diff were due at the same time and no Full has run previously.

I never use the wizard - only ever created policies manually.
We only ever open Full windows over weekends and Incr during the week with no oeverlaps/duplication in backup window.

I recently got caught with the same problem.  Here is how it was fixed.

Open up the incremental schedule,  on the Attributes tab screen check the "Frequency" setting.  It automatically configures to 1 week.  Change it to every 1 Days.  Apply.

I hope it is as simple as this.

Cheers.

If you look at policy output above, you will notice that the Diff schedule is already configured for every 1 day:

Schedule: Differential

Type: Differential

Frequency: every 1 day

No Differentials this week after running fine last.  sad   So I deleted the policy, copied from another working policy and we'll see how it goes.

Anybody have trouble with 'Create a Backup Policy' wizard lately?  How did you resolve?
