No server is available

Created: 30 May 2012 | 9 comments

I'm having some issues with our 6.x clients reporting that "No server is available" when trying to run a task from the client.  Has anybody ever encountered this issue before?  The only thing that I can think of is that we recently changed all of our packages to download and run on the client locally.  Most of the packages were previously set to run from the server.

Was that option set on the actual Agent configuration policy, or in the Advanced tab for each SWD Task individually?  And just to be clear; you're talking about standard Software Delivery Tasks, not Task Server-based tasks/jobs?  Any changes made to your Sites/Subnets configuration?  What does the agent.log file on one of the affected clients show?  Are these pre-existing packages you're deploying, or new ones?  You may want to try cloning one of the existing tasks, then disabling the original, and see if that helps; sometimes the agents seem to get stuck on a particular Task.  Does restarting the agent, and/or forcing a new policy file (by deleting the old one from \altiris agent\client policies directory) have any effect?

Thanks,
Kyle

It was set on the Advanced tab for each SWD task individually.  These are Software Delivery Tasks and no changes have been made to the Site/Subnet configuration.  These were all pre-existing packages.  I'm going to check the agent.log on one of the affected clients.

This is the only thing the agent log says.

I did try deleting the client policies folder and that did not help either.

Check DNS.  Confirm the problem client can resolve the NS server name that's included in the configuration.  You can view this through the Altiris Agent UI.

Do you still have this issue? Is that the run history that says the server is unavailable?

Yes, still have this issue.  The message shows on the screen when you highlight the job and then click on the link to start it.

If you uninstall the agent on a computer, reboot, and reinstall the agent, is the issue resolved?  This would eliminate client-side causes.  You deleted policies but not task cache.  It could still be task-related.

yes, like Mike said, it could be a client side issue. I had this problem on a few machines and after a re-install of Altiris agent, the tasks ran fine.
