When I go to the fileconnect website, i notice that for Brightmail Gateway product, I only have the option of a download for Linux. Is there a Windows version?

Completely confusing isn't it.  Especially when you are a customer that doesn't receive any notification of name changes, product reassignments, etc.  I've been a symantec volume licensed customer for over a decade, and I'm more confused by their naming standard, product families, and licensing structure, than ever before.

To answer you question, the SAV for SMTP for Windows product was replaced with Symantec Brightmail Gateway.  It comes as an appliance, or an ISO that can be used to automatically build up a VM under an ESX or ESXi box.  These VM's are built off of a Linux kernel, so there is no Windows version.

I've made the change over the past few weeks, and am very pleased with the new product.  I found it ironic though that Symantec went from a "don't you dare even try to virtualize SAV for SMTP" to "oh, the replacement product can be an ESX VM only, and by the way, the end of life was just announced for our old product.  ...have a nice day."  Okay, so that isn't exactly what Symantec said, but that is the impression that a long time customer (me) got.

So on my current server, I have Exchange 2007 and GFI running.  If I want to impliment Brightmail Gateway, I not only have to run it as a VM, but on a seperate server as well?

Absolutely, you need your own server. This is a gateway appliance. The whole point of the product is to deal with junk so your mail server is free to handle the actual mail and not be bogged down when users are trying to get their vital messages.

You would not want Windows to be running such a product. You would have to reboot it often, there would be all sorts of security issues and you would need twice as much resources such as RAM and CPU to get the same kind of performance the Brightmail Appliance gives you. Its a great product.

If you're looking for a 'bolt-on' product you can install on your small buiness server, look at Brightmail Message Filter or one of our Mail Security products for Exchange or Domino.

I think you are looking at the wrong product.  Symantec has an Exchange specific product - Information_Foundation_Mail_Security_For_MSE
This filters for viruses on the Exchange environment.   Symantec Brightmail Gateway is for filtering e-mail between the internet and your organization (both in and outbound).  You can also deploy it internally and use compliance filters to monitor for inappropriate content (e.g. secrete product details).

BTW:  Not supported, but I've managed to get the Brightmail ISO to load using the current free VMware Player.
