Norton Ghost 8.3 and Dell latitude E5500 laptop

Hi everyone,

We just got some new laptops, Dell Latitude E5500 but I can't seem to figure out how to load the right network driver in my Norton Ghost server.

I've tried everything (or almost) and nothing has worked. It's very frustrating. In Windows on the laptop it say that the netcard is Broadcom 57xx, but when contacting Dell they say it is Intel

82567LM Integrated Gigabit Ethernet.

Does anyone know how I can "install" the right drivers on my ghost server so I can begin to take a image of my new laptop.

Best regards

Emil

Wanted to stop by as I am in pretyt much the same boat with an E6500.  I just started trying to install the driver but haven't had any luck yet.  If anyone figures this out, please post a solution and I will do the same if I can resolve it.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=3024&DwnldID=4239&agr=Y&lang=deu&PrdMap=3024

Then just add as you would any dos driver. Includes a setup file making it easy.

Still no luck with my E6500. I've tried the e1000 NDIS and ODI to no avail. I even downloaded the driver from Dell and pulled out the DOS drivers as suggested by their Gold Tech, but it still can't load. Any other ideas?

We just got some E6500's and I am also unable to push an image to them. Did any one ever figure this one out?

Thanks,

John

As jimbonics suggested, download the drivers for the Intel cards from Intel, not Dell.  On the left side, find Ethernet Components, Ethernet Controllers and then find the 82567 driver.  Grab the DOS, XP and Vista Drivers.

For the DOS driver, I don't think I had to update the actual e1000.dos file, but you do need to add the PCI-TAG into the mcassist.cfg located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\Intel Pro 1000.  I added every tag from the .inf file I saw, redid my DOS boot USB Key and it worked fine.  The exact PCI-TAG for the newer Latitude/Precision series is 8086-10F5. Whatever you name it in the mcassist.cfg is what will show up when your DOS boot disk loads the driver so name it accordingly.

For the Windows XP/Vista drivers, you'll need to open the Ghost Boot Wizard and edit one of PE images, doesn't matter which one.  Add the Vista and XP Drivers ( I kept similar naming, ie. Intel.Pro1000Vista, you'll do it twice, once for each driver) and check the boxes next to both.  When you hit OK, the PE you opened will recompile with the updated drivers.  When that's done, you need to select the other image and hit Refresh so it will update.

That should update your DOS and Windows PE boot options with the latest drivers for the new Dell laptops.

It took a lot of trial and error, but following Meckron's instructions for the DOS boot I finally got it to work on my e6500's. I did have some issues with it, but by taking screen shots of the autoexec running I could work through each error. Somehow my e1000 became corrupt (0kb), and it kept telling me the PCI adapter wasn't there, but I successfully pushed an image over the network!

Could you define "PE" Image for me? Im having the Same issues with my E6500's. I thought it was a Bio issue like our Optiplex 755's.

Ghost 8.3 does not come with WinPE so don't worry about the XP drivers unless you plan to upgrade to GSS 2.5 (Ghost 11.5).

Another thing to check out is your BIOS settings. I'm not sure what you are looking for but some new computers do not accept DOS drivers any more, see if there is some option in there.

You can also go to www.ghost.com and try the new version (make a WinPE boot disk, uses XP drivers, also can use 1 disk to boot every model of PC). Just an idea if your intrested in upgrading.

I've tried everything in the BIOs, I've tried adding the PCI-TAGs, Still no go. It won't boot to pull an image from the VP or boot to PC-DOS of a Ghost boot Disk. Dell has been of little help. We have 2 of these E6500's so I tried it on both with no luck. Dell Obviously says its fine, but won't help much on the Bios settings. Any help would be appreciated. I have a sneaky suspicion it has to do with the new Virtualization settings in the Bios. But I've tried it both on and Off and still nothing.

Thanks Everyone.

This didn't work for me with Dell Latitude E6500 laptop.

I have tried a lot of different things without any luck, but now it works !

In Ghost Boot Wizard I added the Driver Name(E1000$) and the parameter SLOT=25 - thats all !!!

By some reason the port-assignment failed when set to automatic, and the drivername was not accepted, though it was written correctly in the ini-files !

TJ, what errors are you getting when you try to boot to the PC-DOS disk? We have our Virtualization set to off, and the NIC set to On/PXE.

Still getting error

dos error sys0006 occurred trying to load "A:\Net\Net.exe"

I got this error before & after following Meckron suggestion.

I updated the PCI-TAG by adding this 8086-10F5 tag into the mcassist.cfg located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\Intel Pro 1000.  but got the above error.

can you tell me how would you edit that .cfg file? i did it by opening it in Notepad & then edited it.

also can you tell me how or where to get all available tags like someone mentioned so i could add just to mk sure i don't miss anything..

thnks.

Is this the same as what you are seeing?

Does the notebook have the Intel ICH9 chipset?  Saw a similar problem with some HP laptops - they have a customer advisory about it: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01517092&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=3688868&prodTypeId=321957

DESCRIPTION

SATA (Serial ATA) devices cannot be detected under DOS (Disk Operating System) or a pre-boot environment when the notebook PC is in AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) mode.

Also useful for SATA drives

I just wanted to point out that in some cases with PC-DOS, assuming that your are booting up and getting network support, adding these command line switches will often get you access to a SATA drive, even in AHCI mode:

-FNI -FFX -NOIDE -NOUSB

Of course, this does not always work. And using Windows PE boot media either created by the Ghost Boot Wizard in Ghost Solution Suite 2.5, or via the Ghost Console in the same version, is a better solution. If going the route of using GSS 2.5, I would definitely run all three LiveUpdates and add the latest Windows Vista drivers (Windows PE uses Windows Vista drivers) via these instructions:

How to add drivers to DeployAnywhere or WinPE.

Got it working

Hello guys!

I had the same problem as the original post nad has been strugling with this for a couple of days. My computers is E5500. I have read this page like 5-10 times and tryed the different options. But no luck.

I almost had given up when i tryed with a broadcom(Broadcom Netextreme something) driver from my boot CD and it worked. So I guess it could be both Intel and Broadcom. "Broadcom Netextreme"

Just wanted to make a post here because it was the only page I found when I was looking for my problem.

I have also found that

I have also found that another problem with these E6500 machine is the SATA Controller driver.

Add the 2 following drivers to your WinPE image:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18859&lang=eng

and

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=2684&l=en&s=pub&releaseid=R247419&SystemID=LAT_E6500&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=11814&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=5&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=5&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=360749

Make sure for the first one, you add it in the "storage drivers" tab.

I screwed with this problem for quite awhile before I finally just opened up a problem ticket with Symantec and they helped me out quite a bit.
