Norton Safe Web Lite beta available

  • 1.  Norton Safe Web Lite beta available

    Posted Mar 24, 2010 01:51 PM

There is a beta of Norton Safe Web Lite available for download. For those of you that are familiar with Norton’s site safety markup on Web search results, you can now run this feature on your enterprise systems. No more manually adding links to the Safe Web site to check if the site is safe from threats.

This could be a great feature to add for defending against the ever-growing landscape of online threats.

Vote to have this added in a future version of SEP - https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/idea/add-safe-web-lite-sep

    Safe surfing,

    Couple of questions.

    1. Once this is no longer Beta will it be offered as a free download?
    2. You have recommended this for the Enterprise but this is a Norton product. Is there anything in the EULA that prevents enterprises from using this for free? Other consumer type security solutions offer free use for personal but not enterprise.
    3. Any plans to make this centrally managed? What about integrating this with SEP?

    1. I will check on this and report back here with an answer.
    2. See EULA below
    3. As of now i do not know if this is planned for SEP. I will add this to the Ideas forum.

    Yeah, what he said.
As of now, SEP users in the enterprise have no web safety! In fact, most threats come in via web redirects, unsafe ads or automated downloads, and almost all, if you find the source IP, are blacklisted somewhere......... but we don't know until it's too late.
I almost feel better protect from web threats on my home computer.
Although lately, I have to admit, I've done some google searches, clicked on a link and had SEP block going to the site! WOW, amazing.

Norton Safe Web will be offered as a free download when the beta is over, that will be sometime this summer.

The idea to have this offered in the Endpoint product has been submitted. If many users feel this would be useful, then it will be considered to be included in a future release.

Users can vote on the idea in the "Ideas" section of the forum.

Noted it works well with Vista and IE 7, but in windows 7 wiht IE8, it only rates the domain you are at.
If you are using GOOGLE and do a search, it does't show ratings of any of the results like it does under XP or Vista with IE7.
Bug - or a configuration thing?

The problem is because of Google's recent changes to its web page in IE8 that affect the timing of certain notifications we get to keep our annotations being displayed. And the issue is not specific to any particular keyword. Symantec is aware of the issue and working on it.

Meanwhile, you can try the following workarounds:

1.Add google.com (or google.co.in or google.co.uk depending on your locality) in compatibility view (from IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings)and check 'Display all sites in compatibility view'. Also make sure if the Microsoft's 'XML DOM Document' Add-on is enabled in your IE8 Add-ons(Tools-->Manage add-ons--> Run without permission).

    2. If the previous solution does not work,You can add Google search as IE8's default search engine, or if you have Google toolbar installed, you can search from there as well to get the annotations for your search results.

LOL - we prevent google softwre of any sort from installing here, so this is just an excuse for me to switch to bing anyway!

    ;)

Even the boss cringes at the google toolbars and such - "too intrusive".
I think they were the reason MS added privacy mode in IE8! HA.
    Thanks.
I love this, hope to see it in SEP soon!

The Norton Beta Center (here http://www.symantec.com/norton/beta/index.jsp) no longer lists Web Safe Lite, and clicking on the link at the top of this post only briefly shows the Web Safe Lite page then automatically redirects back to the Beta Center page.    So has Web Safe Lite become a full-fledged product? or removed due to problems?
