  • 1.  Not enough disk space to update definition files

    Posted Apr 15, 2009 02:59 PM
I have a system that does not have enough disk space on the partition that contains the Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec folder.  This system is a small computer that is connected to a Xerox Fiery Document Printing Center.  The system is running a version of Windows XP that is referred to as Windows Embedded.  I am running Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, version 10.1.6.6000

The system has one drive that has three partitions.  The C:\ partition is a 2GB partition with less than 800MB free.  The D:\ partition is a 15GB partition with less than 1GB free, and is where the Documents and Settings Directory is located.  The E:\ partition is a 136GB partition with 130GB free.

The application was initially installed on the D:\ partition, but I was able to get it removed and have since reinstalled it on the E:\ partition that has the most space.  The problem is that the app, still put the Symantec folder (that gets loaded to Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data) back on the D:\ partition and now I don't have enough disk space to update my defintion files.

How can I get the install program to put my Symantec folder (the one that gets loaded to Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data) on the partition that has the most space.  I tried creating a  Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data folder structure on the E:\ partition before I reinstalled the program, hoping that the Symantec folder that contains the 7.5 folder would go to the E:\Documents and Settings folder, but it didn't.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Here are some of my suggestions

    1. Increase partion of drive C
    2. Move all other programs to drive D or E
    3. WinXP required HD space is 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space
    4. You should change the profile path to D or E, (but not sure). Below is the procedure:
Go to Start>Run>Regedit and browse toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\C urrentVersion\ProfileList. On this entry you will see an entry onthe right for %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings. You should be ableto substitute %systemdrive% for whichever drive letter you want.

    Hope this helps.

To be compliant with MS requirements for certification, the bit you see installing to the all users folder as far as I've found, can't be moved or changed.
The program can, as you have found.
IMO, that space is way too small for Windows alone.
I'd get partition magic and repartition that drive.  Can you move or uninstall other things that reside on C? or D?
the OS won't be stable as it is anyway. It's hard to believe you don't have other issues............
I refuse to run windows with less than 15% free space on the OS drive, and never under 1.5gig
When i see those numbers, I cringe and work to get it changed.
I guess it's possible I'm wrong, but I doubt you'll get the defs and all users folders to move.
How do you get windows to update security and other updates with such a small free space? does it run updates?

I agree with ShadowsPapa, you should have atleast 15% free space or more this should be your limit? Did you try changing the profile folder?
