Notify customer

We have automated alerts from a system. When they come in, we want to be able to notify the customer. The idea was that we could identify the customer from the content of the alert.
I guess we could do that with one rule per customer, but that seems clumsy.
Is there some way I could set the contact or the person to notify based on the attributes of the alert?
