  • 1.  Novell/Netware to Active Directory using Altiris DS

    Hi All,

Just want to make sure we have most issues covered, so if anyone has done this before, some DO's and DONT's would be much appreciated.

We have a Novell/Netware enviroment running on WINXP desktops and will be in the process of moving over to Active Directory.

This enviroment doesnt have Altiris as yet, but we will install DS 6.9 and look to use Personality Migrations to caputre the users's Profiles and re-deploy back to the SAME machine.

The first thing that comes to mind is 'permissions'

I would assume we need to install and configure Deployment Solution Server to be on the NEW Active Directory Site and then do the Captures in batches of 10. Making sure that DS uses an account which local Admin rights on all the workstations.

If anyone has specific reference to the template we need to create that would be helpfull.

I'm assuming we dont actually need to distribute a NEW image to each pc after the capture, but could possibly apply the captured data to the new profile on the existing pc? Or is Altiris clever enough to simply rename the existing profile and change all security permisions on the workstation?

    Regards Steve

Altiris DS is clever enough if you tell it to be.
It will take a lot of scripting to make Altiris clever enough to do the task you want.

My best guess is to keep the clients as they are and make them both Netware and AD aware.
After that you are able to dismiss the netware directory so that the clients only take their profiles from AD.
If you make a client logon to Netware and at the same time also on AD and you configure the profile path in AD, the profile will be transferred to the new AD network.
After you disable the netware client the profile will stay available because it is transferred.

As usually Profiles are a pain in the #$@$^&^&. make sure you test very well before doing mass rollouts.
Some kind of profile management is in place and you should consider that as an option.
