NS 7?

Joshua Rock's picture

I'm attempting to install Dell Client Manager to altiris and it installed some Symantec Installation manager that wants me to migrate to Notification Server 7. I can't even find documentation about 7. Thoughts?

I believe NS7 is still in beta

Williama is correct that CMS and SMS is still in beta. The current version of Dell Client Manager (3.0) is built on the Notification Server Core 7 infrastructure which was released to Dell in October as of last year. There has been ongoing work in the Notification Server 7 infrastructure and solutions since then. If you look at any of the current betas (RC2 is the latest) you will notice the Symantec Management Platform (NS Core) is on SP1.

In order to install Dell Client Manager 3.0 you need to install the NS7.0 infrastructure which uses the Symantec Installation Manager (SIM)

So, if you intend to use just DCM, you could install the DCM 3.0 (and the NS7 based platform). It doesn't appear, from previous posts, that there is much on the Dell forums about v3.

If you want to manage Dells, and keep using NS6 CMS based solutions, you could use the DCM 2.2 version in NS6.

As Jonathan points out, CMS7 based solutions are in beta and should not be used in production.

EDITED to clarify this post, based on Jonathan's post.

Currently right now DCM and CMS 7 cannot be installed on the same platform. Also the CMS7 solutions are still in Beta so you would not want to use them in production.

Correct, I'm not disagreeing with that point. From Josh's post, I didn't know if he was just using the DCM or if he wanted to manage Dell's with NS.

EDIT: Rereading my previous post, it seemed a bit ambiguous at best. Hopefully the edit cleared that up.

Thanks for the info. I have CMS 6 managing my Dell and HP workstations and HP client manager installed as well. I was installing DCM from a download and it stated I needed to go to 7. I have decided to just install via the solutions options in NS6 and go from their for now.

Thanks again.

So... say you accidently go the lonely road to NS7 for the sake of the Dell and HP client managers and you want to get back to 6? Or am I better off staying at NS7 and waiting for CMS 7 to be released?

The Dell 3.0 console is a separate application built on the NS7 technology, and there was a similar DCM console for the v6 technology. Most people (that I'm aware of) just loaded the NS platform and installed the Dell DCM plugin solution though.

So, installing the DCM 3.0 console won't allow you to install the native CMS7 solutions (which will be released the week of March 6th), although I'm sure there will some format that will be available.

So, if I were you, I would just stand pat with the 6 versions, and wait until NS7 is fully released.

Apparently only a week to go before the release so it can be anounced at Manage Fusion.
