NS7 with front end server?
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 1 comment
So we just rolled out Outlook Anywhere and OCS 2007 at our office. Both services now reduce the need for the end user to use the VPN client when working remotely. Is it possible to setup some sort of front end server that the Altiris Agent would connect to over SSL when outside the office? If not, could you setup a second NIC for external connections on the NS server?
We already have split DNS and ISA in our environment so we should be able to get the agent to behave and find the server when inside or outside if we use a DNS alias for the NS server. Is it possible?

Interesting idea
The fully functioning 'forward facing' server, has been mentioned as being on the road map, but I haven't seen it yet. You could probably place a server in the DMZ, utilizing HTTPS, and open up the appropriate ports. If the clients can connect to it, they can post their data.
With a properly defined hierarchy, you could then send client data up the tree, and management tasks down.
So, in short, no I haven't tried it. ;)
