We are installing agents on some of our servers to begin tracking them in the CMDB.  We've been using these tools for a short period of time, and have installed the agent on several PCs up to this point (we started with Helpdesk, and are slowing getting familiar with Asset Management).  For servers, we want to know if they are real or virtual for tracking and reporting purposes, and I've noticed that there are two resource types that seem to apply; "Computer" and 'Virtual Machine".  The problem I'm having is how to move machines once managed and classified as "Computer" to be "Virtual Machine".

I found a scheduled task that appears to address this, but it doesn't do anything.  It's called "NS.Modify VirtualMachine Item Resource Type".  I run it, but I still get no Virtual machines.  I've seen a blog which talks about switching the resource type GUID through SQL, but I want to avoid this.

Does anyone know what this scheduled process does, or if I can run the command by hand outside the scheduler? What does it trigger on to determine if a machine is Virtual?

I realize one solution would be to add another type to the Computer Type list called "virtual Server", but then I have to set this manually everytime a new machine is added.

FYI - We are on NS6.

The schedule task called NS.Modify.VirtualMachine Item Resource Type runs every day and changes the resource type of the virtual computers from a computer resource ('493435F7-3B17-4C4C-B07F-C23E7AB7781F') to a virtual Machine ('2C3CB3BB-FEE9-48DF-804F-90856198B600').

If the Virtual machine computers are not showing in the Inv_AeX_VirtualComputer collection you should check if they are showing in the vComputerResource view with ResourcetypeGuid '2C3CB3BB-FEE9-48DF-804F-90856198B600'.
