I have about 4GB worth of old virus definitions eating up space at the following location:

    C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.1000.157.105\Data\Definitions\VirusDefs

It won't let me delete the old folders though, even with the SEP service stopped.  Anybody have a way to clean up this folder, hopefully, without a reboot being required.

    Hello,

Configure the Disk space Management for Virus Def.

To configure the disk space used for LiveUpdate downloads

    1. In the console, click Admin.

    2. Click Servers and select the site that you want to configure.

    3. Under Tasks, click Edit Site Properties, and then click LiveUpdate.

    4. Under Disk Space Management for Downloads, type the number of content downloads that you want to store.

    5. If you want to reduce the amount of disk space used, uncheck the Store client packages unzipped to provide better network performance for upgrades option. Note: Disabling this option also disables the ability of Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to construct deltas between content revisions and may adversely affect network performance for updates.

    6. Click OK.

Thats on the management server...I am looking on how to clear these on a client.  It just appears this one client isn't clearing old definitions at all.

When I get to Step 4 and clearing out those old folders, I get "Folder Access Denied, you need permission to perform this action.  You Require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder."

I am logged in as Admin, but it appears this folder is protected by UAC.  Our enterprise policy is we can NOT disable UAC.  Running command prompt as an Admin can trying deleting them from there I also get access denied.

I need to clear this folder, any other ideas?

OK, just did it my own way.  Being a virtual machine, I just turned it off, mounted the VMDK file on another machine, deleted the filese, removed it from that VM, and booted it back up.  Now I am good to go.

Yes by defaults in that directory it contains 3 virus Definitions update, is there any reason why it stores 3 instead of just two to reduce some disk space ?
