This issue has been solved. See solution.

Guys,

I have a synthetic backup configured in my environment..problem is one of its stream is failing.

Now my question is,can i rerun that stream without rerunning the complete backup and still gets the 'synthetic effect ?'

Any other info about Synthetic Backup would also be appreciated :)

thanks

You have not shared any info about the failure...
Have you fixed the problem to ensure next attempt will be successful?

My experience with resuming a failed job that is in Incomplete state will restart the job with exact same parameters.

hi Marianne..thanks for replying...failure is with error 24..i dont know it may be due to the large size of that mount point..it may or may not get succesful..however,what i m more interested is to know what would happen if it wil get sucessful ? would it be a valid synthetic image ?

If you can restart the failed stream via the Admin Console, then it *should* perform as expected (as Marianne states "... [it] will restart the job with exact same parameters." ) - altho' it's not something I have had to try as we do not use multiple data streams (see below***). Any failures we have encountered as a consequence are the whole synthetic job.

It *will* restart from the beginning as synthetics are not checkpointed to allow a resume from the point of failure.

*** As a slight aside, multi-streaming (and multi-plexing for that matter) are not necessarily 'recommended' for performance/efficiency reasons:

I assume that this a Synthetic Full?
Which means that no connection to the client is needed and all processing is taking place on the media server... making a status 24 a bit 'strange'.

I would personally rather spend energy on troubleshooting the error rather that restarting/resuming the job and merely 'hoping' that the job will finish this time...

Hmmmm ..... indeed. So that does beggar the question "What exactly is failing?"

A status 24 during a synthetic could be a timeout whilst processing a large backup - try increasing the client read timeouts on the Master and Media to 3600 (odd i know but like me NetBackup does tend to talk to itself!)

Also share the full text of the failed job so that we can assess that and advise on what other logs may be needed to troubleshoot this for you
