One time client exclusion from a policy.
Hello all,
So I'd like some suggestions on a particular issue.
The Issue:
The issue is that we have over 1,000 netbackup clients in our environment. Similarly we have an equal number of policies. The theme being that there's one policy to one client. The reason for this is that there are a frequent number of requests to exclude client backups for running due to certain maintenance jobs that run on certain systems, thus backups cannot be running during these maintenance jobs, or even the services for that matter.
What I'm trying to do:
I'd like to drastically reduce the number policies we are running and group more clients together, within less policies essentially.
My Question:
What would be the best way to accomplish excluding a single netbackup client from running a backup when it's in a policy of multiple clients?
Our environment:
NBU 6.5.3
Master Server: Win2k3 64bit standard
Comments
On the client
Just stop the netbackup client service on the the client and netbackup cannot attach so it cannot run.
We do this a lot.
If the windows guys know they are going to be doing something big on the server during the time of the backups they just stop the service. when they are done the start the service back up.

Probably the best way at the mo is
how Judy's mentioned (not sure on the UNIX side as nothing runs until a job is active)
You could also temporarily remove the client from the policy, but neither are really very pretty & at least Judy's method will error out reminding you to reactivate the client services.
There is an "Idea" posted that is currently "In Review", so maybe at some point in the future this feature will become available?

I do get on them if they do
I do get on them if they do not reactivate - I send an email to all the windows admins saying - serverA failed backups last night did you remember to reactivate? They are getting better at doing that.
I admit I don't have this issue with my unix servers as Change Controls are early in the evening and my unix backups don't start till 2 am.
