Open FIle Option Errors

Created: 01 Aug 2007 • Updated: 23 May 2010 | 7 comments

Finally got my issue with the unrecognized drive remedied, thanks to all that helped.

Now another problem.  The backup jobs are completing but not backing up any open files.  Here is the message in the BE log:

Backup Exec developed an error while trying to synchronize the server using the Open File Option. The backup will continue without using the open file option. Please refer to SYS:\SYSTEM\OFM\OFMNW.LOG for further details.

The OFMNW.LOG show this:
02007 07 31 00:02:35  Agent requested synchronization.
02007 07 31 11:09:22  Agent requested stop synchronization.
That doesn't seem to show any problems.  However as recent as early last week the log shows a history of numerous files being released, for example:

02007 07 24 15:57:57  File Released File Name = SYS:\APPS\GANDGPO\OFFILES\FDB\4524F4AF.000

I looked around for any other log files and found this in SSO_ERR.LOG:
GANDG\SYS:\BKUPEXEC\LOG\SSO_ERR.LOG : Start Shared Storage errors

I have reviewed my OPEN FILE settings in the BE policies that I use.  Just to confirm, here is what is checked/unchecked off:

[X] USE OPEN FILE OPTION (if available)
[  ]Process Logical Volumes one at a time (Windows only)

Default Treatment of open files
[  ] Never backup open files
[  ] Backup if closed within 30 seconds
[X] Backup open files with a lock
[  ] Backup open files without a lock

Any thoughts on what is going on?  The logfiles aren't raising any red flags for me.

Thanks,
Tom

Can you post back with copies of the following files:

sys:\system\ofmcdm.cfg
sys:\system\ofm\ofmnw.cfg

I'd start with making these changes:

1. BESTOP
2. Edit sys:\system\ofm\ofmnw.cfg and set:

SyncTimeOut=180
WriteInactivityPeriod=2
VerboseMsgLogging=1

3. Edit sys:\system\ofmcdm.cfg and set:

WriteInactivityPeriod = 0x2
SyncTimeOut = 0xB4
VerboseMessageLogging = 0x1

4. BESTART

See if that helps.

just made the changes and I'll report back tomorrow after tonight's backup.

Just to confirm, the WriteInactivityPeriod did not need to be changed in the ofmcdm.cfg file as it was already set to 0x2

Thanks!
Tom

I decided to run a small test backup of GroupWise files I knew would be open.  I still got the open file errors.  Here are the first few lines of the BE log.

Set description: "BackupJob_8"
Backup of GANDG.NetWare File System/GANDG/SYS:
Drive: "HA:1 ID:8 LUN:0 EXABYTE VXA-172-00"
File \APPS\GANDGPO\MTA_LOG\0802MTA.002 or one of its streams is in use - SKIPPED.
File \APPS\GANDGPO\OFMSG\MSG13.DB or one of its streams is in use - SKIPPED.
File \APPS\GANDGPO\OFMSG\MSG23.DB or one of its streams is in use - SKIPPED.
File \APPS\GANDGPO\OFMSG\MSG16.DB or one of its streams is in use - SKIPPED.

Do you see any errors in sys:\system\ofm\ofmnw.log?

tjubb's picture

ok, this is very strange.  After the failed test backup yesterday, I didn't make any changes and the nightly backup ran with no errors appearing in the BE log.

However, when I look at the ys:\system\ofm\ofmnw.log I see a few things of interest:

22007 08 03 01:22:22  File Synchronize Failed File Name = SYS:\APPS\GANDGPO\WPCSIN\X6B2834E.000
22007 08 03 01:22:22  Synchronized SYS:\APPS\GANDGPO\WPCSIN\X6B2834E.000 was moved to SYS:\APPS\GANDGPO\WPCSIN\4\46B2834E.VN1

I'm assuming that error is thrown because the file/email was moved by GroupWise and I can probably ignore this error.

Not sure what to make of this (it was near the end of the log):
02007 08 03 07:41:32  Agent requested stop synchronization.
02007 08 03 07:41:32  Backup Complete
02007 08 03 07:41:32  System Not Synchronized

I also see tons of File Released File Name entries in the log as well as Preview Data Started File Name entries.  Those appear to be normal operational items I take it.
