Currently running SMS for SMTP 5.01

In the type of business were in, we see a number of agencies e-mails come in as Open Proxy.  We attempt to work with them to get them fixed.  But, because we don't want to lose business, we currently prepend with a subject of "Open Proxy" and move them to Spam Quarantine.   In reviewing the Spam Quarantine, most, if not all, Open Proxy e-mails daily are Spam.  We will be moving to Brightmail shortly and would like to modify this rule to allow the e-mails to continue on and hopefully let the Spam Rules capture the e-mails.  With the mutiple scanning verdicts, would most of the "Open Proxy" e-mails be flagged as Spam?

    Thanks,

    Doug

Do you mean that your external customer are sending from hosts that Symantec has on their open proxy list?  I don't see a Symantec specific setting for a proxy list.

I think you need to be adding the sending domain and/or sending IP Addresses to the Local Good Senders Domiain/IP list.

Yes, that is correct.  Sorry...still living the the SMS for SMTP 5.x world.  It's under Reputation, Symantec Global Bad Senders now.  If I look at most of the items being flagged currently by the rule, we move them to Spam Quarantine.  99% of them, I consider Spam.  I just want to make sure with the multiple verdicts, these items will be ran through the Spam rules before a decision is made.  Currently, in 5.x, they don't.  Once marked as Open Proxy, they are sent to the next hop and not check for being Spam.

In the message audit logs you should see a list of the verdicts that were applied.

I'm not currently running Brightmail 9.x.  Currently running on SMS for SMTP 5.x.  The question was posed as "What happens".  I can't test this because I don't want production mail running through Brightmail yet.  Just was hoping someone has this type of configuration running and could get some info from them.

In 9.x the "opl" list is now referred to as the "Symantec Global Bad Sender" list.  You can configure the action just as you do today with SMSSMTP for mail originating from open proxies. In addition SBG offers you more actions that you may be interested in.  Hope this helps.

To test SBG 9 I wrote a policy on SBG 8 to forward all my spam to the SBG 9 box.  I added a compliance rule to drop all traffic.  The spam rules were checked before the compliance policy.

Doing this will allow you to get a feel for SBG 9, and test implement a bunch of the new features.

Be sure to add your SMS SMTPv5 boxes IP address as an internal host in SBG 9.  BTW: SBG 9 will look at msg headers to figure out if the sender is a spammer, if it knows your SMS SMTP v5 IP is local.SMTP v5 Spam Route

Thanks for the suggestion.  I never thought of that.
