"Operating System Not Found" frequently after Ghost Restore

Hi,

I used Ghost Solution Suite 2.0 to image a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit system that I had built.  The hard drives were RAID 10 in a single partition if that matters.  I ran out of space later, so I replaced all the hard drives with larger ones and restored the image to the new partition.  Ever since I did the restore, every few reboots I get an error about "Operating System Not Found" when it reboots.  I have to boot from the Windows DVD and do a startup repair.  That will fix it for the short term again.  After several months of this I got tired, so I decided to wipe the whole partition and reload Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Unfortunately, the same problem still persists!  I have to repair the start-up on many occasions.  The OS and data still are intact.

I've seen many similar instances when I googled this issue, but I can't find a permanent solution.

Can anyone help me to get this fixed permanently?

Thank you!

Hi Kent, Usually, if it is

 Hi Kent,

Usually, if it is an issue with restoring, it should not re-appear every now and then. It should just fail, and once repaired, should stay. In your case, I suspect a driver issue with the RAID card. Some time back I had a similar issue, when I replaced disks in an external SATA card with larger drives (not RAID). It was not the boot drive, but disks keep disappearing once in a while. That turned out to be a problem with the driver. The driver I had could work well with smaller disks, but not with the larger disks. Updating the driver resolved the issue, though Windows never complained about the old driver.

Best thing to do is,

  • Have a look at the documentation of RAID card for any caveats about Disk size/specs
  • Check the firmware configuration and set it to safer options than optimal to see if that helps
  • Update the driver with the one from RAID card vendor's site. Drivers come with OS are the latest at the time of the release of OS, so most of the time they do not contain the updated driver. Some vendors still release drivers without digital signatures, and Windows put them at a lower rank though they are newer.

Hope this helps,

Krish
