  • 1.  Option for users to defer running of patches during maintenance window

    Posted Jul 08, 2015 10:05 PM

Running CMS 7.6 and I've created 2 seperate maintenace windows. One for desktop and one for laptops. Desktops will be patched at night during non production hours, However Laptops will need to be patched during the day due to the majority of the machines being offline or powered off.

I've set the window to run for 2 hours daily beginning at 3:00 PM (Agent Time) for the Laptops.

My problem is that our Senior Mgmt team is concerned of any impact with laptop users and would like the option for the user to defer pending patches until they are able. Max defer would be 5 days.

I've been looking and I don't see an option other than to clone the default plugin and then create the start time somtime in the future and then give the use the ability to run. In the end this really isn't desirable since the user would still need to go into the agent and fire them off on their own.

Any way to allow the user to defer the install and then set a threshold to run after x many days of postponed?

    Hi 99_XC600,

have you tried this option to set appropriate time for updates installation?

Open SMP Console --> "Home" --> click on "Patch Management" --> "Installation and Restart" -> click on "Notification" tab:

    PatchOptionsForDefer.jpg

    Information about enabled Maintenance Windows:

Warning: If maintenance windows are defined the Software Update Installation schedule will be ignored and updates will install during the first available maintenance window. Restart of business critical resources may happen if you choose to override maintenance window settings.

    Thanks,

    IP.

    Igor,

That option only allows the deferment of the reboot after the software has been installed.

Sorry, wrong example shown on attached picture. I meant about first option "Software update installation notification" to set as much as required time for patch updates installation... and this message will popup and wait until user will decide to click "Install now", however it can wait a days, if you will set such time range, but it doesn't match what you need, since it doesn't offer option to defer this installation.

There is no such option to defer patch installations and as the way to accomplish this, you've already described it to use appropriate installation schedule time per appropriate scope of managed client computers or just set a days for "Software Update Installation Notification" message, then during all these days user is able to decide when to install them (but isn't able to defer it..)

Found same discussion about "defer" a patch installation (Probably you've already read this):

    Thanks,

    IP.

Actually that's not a bad idea. I think having a timer of X days before it installs on it's own is a good compromise.

The only bad thing about the notification windows, is that there's no way to minimize it
