Oracle agent backups running slow due to synchronous IO

Created: 06 Feb 2014 | 2 comments

We’re running an oracle 8 database on windows 2000 server, and backing up the environment with the oracle agent on Backup Exec 2010. The other backups are running at reasonable speeds but the oracle agent backups are taking a lot longer to complete. After investigating the problem and looking at the backup storage we managed to figure out that the problem was due to the backup using synchronous IO on the disks and not utilising the full potential of the array.

Has anyone encountered this problem and is there anything we can do to speed up the oracle backups?

I am not an Oracle DBA but while researching this I ran across Oracle9i Recovery Manager User's Guide  although you have Oracle 8 there are some tips here that may still be relevant.

BE 2010 does not support Oracle 8.  It only support Oracle 9.2 and above.  See the SCL below
