Created: 14 Aug 2013 | 3 comments

Want to know whether we can take oracle database backup from backup exec directly into the tape without using RMAN. Will this feature requires any additional license/agents to be purchased ? We are having symantec backup exec 2012 small business edition.

To perform backup of Oracle using Backup Exec you need the Applications and Database license. Having said that, Backup Exec Agent would also use RMAN to backup the data from Oracle, but yes you can write it directly to tape.

Edit: Best practices for Backup Exec 2012 Agent for Oracle

Are you refering to the offline backup where the database is offline and you will use the remote agent to backp the flat files of the database.? In this case RMAN will not be used

RMAN is for hot /online backup.

Since you are using the Small Business edition, you cannot add an Agent for Application and Database licence.  Hence you cannot backup Oracle.  See the licencing guide below

2012 Portfolio Licensing Guide

If you shutdown your Oracle and backup the the database files as flat files, there is no guarantee that when you restore these files, you will be able to bring up the database.  Also, I am not sure whether AFE will skip these database files.
