check the RMAN output for the real problem; also review dbclient log on the client

In a clustered environment, failure to connect to the database can mean a problem with the network configuration. The browser must connect locally. However, in some environments, all connections are considered to be remote connections, even a connection to a local database. This behavior is true for example in an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) environment. In such cases, you must make the connection using a TNS alias.

Please double-check the backup script - ensure that root can run the script and that it contains 'su - oracle-user'.  (See the sample scripts for example.)

The difference between server- and user-initiated backups:

user-initiated: script is run as oracle user with all the correct permissions and environment variables.

server-initiated: master connects to client-name in policy (which should be a virtual hostname) with instruction to run the script. The script is executed as root. So, 'su - ...' in the script is a must.

We had a case on oracle backup where we need to make a special connect string for RMAN because there was implemented a connection server. Think RAC also uses this function

Just checked our tnsnames.ora file, we have a service with server shared for logons and a service with server dedicated for rman
