  • 1.  Out-of-box CMS/DS 7.x server with DS 6.9. Which services to run?

    Posted Sep 15, 2015 08:24 AM

    Hello,

I would like to setup an out-of-box CMS server 7.6.x with DS 7.6 for testing.

But I want to install DS 6.9.x in the same server because we're used to this version.

If we want to be able to test DS with both versions, which services do we need to stop/start so we'll have PXE running under CMS/DS or under standalone DS?

    Any tips about this configuration?

    Thanks.

Is the entire server a test machine or are you installing DS 6.9 on a production system for testing purposes?

If the latter, it is recommended to run DS on a different server so that you don't have two db applications competing for resources and connections.

DS 6.9's PXE Server just has a PXE Server service; whereas, DS 7.x has four services.

If you implement MAC Filtering in both products, you should be able to run both PXE Servers at the same time, as a DS 6.9 client will be rejected by a DS 7.x PXE Server.

The entire server will be a production server.

Actually, we have a production server using CMS 7.1.x and DS 6.9.x. We haven't used DS 7.1.x because it was not as complete por PXE Deployment as DS.

Now, we would like to know if it is possible to work using only DS 7.6.x because of the not inclusion of DS 6.9.x in the product (we'll need to purchase GSS 3.x licenses and we can't actually).

Our idea is to maintain DS 6.9.x until all our workflow for deployment can be done with DS 7.6.x so we're trying to setup a new server. Our environment is a very small one -120 machines- so we're sure we can use the same server for SQL, CMS/DS, etc.

The only thing is about the ports used for different services, etc.

The clients will be active in both products, but only one of them running (we would like to have some script to start/stop services so only one DS is active).

Any ideas, tricks, etc. would be very appreciated.

    Thanks.
