I'm using Symantec Hosted Mail Security and have outbound filtering configured. I'd like to filter for social security numbers in outbound email. I've tried using ???-??-???? but it's catching phone numbers. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hello,

The problem you might run into is that credit card numbers are a little more complicated than that. I don't believe you will be able to use a simple regex or wildcard rule to accurately block them.

I know that the Symantec Brightmail Gateway has the ability to block credit card numbers per a pre-populated rule, so there is no extra configuration needed. The issue there is that how they are blocked is proprietary.

Sorry, I know that is a little less than helpful but if you are able to look at the SBG appliance it would be a good option.

    Thanks!

    Tom

Thanks for the prompt response, Tom. My question was regarding social security numbers, not credit card numbers. I suspect your answer may be the same?

    Thanks

Whoops! What am I thinking? Sorry about that...

Well we do have a pattern for Social Security Numbers as well in the SBG appliance. Although it looks like the regex may be viewable. Let me see what I can give out. I'll post again soon.

So I did a look and found a page with a SSN rule in regex that you may be able to use.

    Social Security Number regex

*Please note that this is not Symantec certified and as such I'm not sure of the workings of it. However, this is a pretty well trusted site.*

My only question now would be whether it would work well with SHMS or not. You may try adding a couple users to a group and testing the rule per the group first to make sure it doesn't cause any issues and to make sure it's going to work.

    Hope this helps!

    Tom

Thanks Tom, but I don't think SHMS recognizes reg expressions? I've tested but it doesn't seem to work.

OK, well I guess at this point you may want to give a call to support and see if there is anything else we can do. We need a case so that we can call into our engineering team for SHMS to find out what else we can do.

Sorry that all was less than helpful. :smileysad:
