Outlook Plug-in Asking for Password
This issue has been solved. See solution.
Hello all,
I have a customer site with this Outlook password problem. On random times, Outlook pops up a password window (the one that we're used to). And the requester is the external URL of the Enterprise Vault server. This URL is used for RPC over HTTP and outside world connections to this URL is redirected to the internal EV server.
Everything is fine but it sometimes asks password on some clients.
What could it be?
Can you post a client trace
Can you post a client trace of this happening?
One thing to note is that when the Outlook Add-in for EV sees that RPC over HTTP is configured in the Outlook profile, regardless of whether it's in use or not, it will revert to the "lite" functionality, which is HTTP based. When in this mode, a direct connection will be attempted to the EV server, but if that fails, depending on the version of Exchange we will try what has been configured for the RPC over HTTP proxy URL.
Also what version of Exchange is this?
Thanks

Thanks Rob, It is Exchange
Thanks Rob,
It is Exchange 2007. EV version is 8.0 SP1.
Do you need the trace log at the time password prompt appears or do you want to see the general behaviour? Because it would be hard to catch a log since password window appears randomly.
Best regards,
Bekir Burak Durmaz
hmm I'm not sure, but are
hmm I'm not sure, but are these people Vault Cache enabled? It could be trying to authenticate for updates to that.. which is why you may only see it randomly.
If you can post a general client log, that would be fine ... then we can see what is happening (ensure you've got full logging enabled though please)
Thanks

Yes Vault Cache is enabled.
Customer is complaning about that it is not remembering the password.
Here's some part of the logs, I hope it'd be enough:

I think the authentication
I think the authentication prompts you are getting are because of updates needing to be done against Vault Cache, and that coupled with RPC/HTTP may mean occassional prompts for authentication.
Hope that helps,
Thanks

How can I stop these
How can I stop these prompts?
What will be affected if I do so?
Thanks Rob, it's appreciated.

I think we need to get to the
I think we need to get to the bottom of the environment a bit more. What authentication types are used, what credentials the user is logging in as, how they are configured for RPC/HTTP.
Thanks

I use RPC/HTTP with Vault
I use RPC/HTTP with Vault Cache and would get those prompts occassionally. I set up my EV server with a managed password.
1) On the users desktop, navigate to the Control Panel -> User Accounts
2) Select the Advanced Tab -> click the "Manage Passwords" button
3) Add the EV Server to the list with the correct User Name and Password
4) Close and re-open Outlook and attempt to download the item again
One thing the user will need to remember is to change the password here if his password changes.

Users' Outlooks are set to do
Users' Outlooks are set to do an NTLM authentication. IIS is configured to allow Integrated Authentication and Basic Authentication.
Tony, this doesn't sound managable. I need to find a base solution.
For example, do you think that restricting Vault cache while on RPC would help?
Thanks.
Best regards,
Bekir Burak Durmaz
Remember with NTLM aka
Remember with NTLM aka Integrated authentication Outlook can't hop the authentication from one machine to another. So if you login to Outlook with RPC/HTTP and NTLM, that'll be to a front-end server. When we want to talk to the EV server authentication will have to happen again.
When you say IIS is set to basic & integrated.. you mean IIS on the EV server?
If you restrict vault cache by disabling it when RPC/HTTP is detected then you will hit a problem. Outlook can not tell the extensions when RPC/HTTP is in-use, only that it is configured in the profile. So if the Outlook profile says on fast networks to use TCP/IP and on slow networks to use HTTP, we hit the problem that we can't tell when you're on which... and for that reason the extensions at the moment check whether RPC/HTTP is enabled in the profile, and if it is, then it will apply the restrictions, regardless of whether or not RPC/HTTP is actually in use on the connection at this moment in time.
Also if you restrict RPC/HTTP in the way you mention, a user will still get prompted for authentication the first they open an archived item, I think (or try to open the integrated search page, or archive explorer).
Thanks

Hello Rob, Thanks so much for
Hello Rob,
Thanks so much for your clear and explaining answers.
Yes I'm talking about the IIS on EV, specifically Enterprisevault virtual directory.
We shouldn't be the first one doing this scenario (vault cache and RPC enabled at the same time), do we? Moreover, both exhcange and EV credentials are same since there is an Active Directory environment.
There should be a solution to this guys???
Thanks

It would have to be built..
It would have to be built.. and tested in order to be 100% sure what's happening... and unfortunately I'm busy with other things at the moment, but you're welcome to build and test it, and post your comments, and results here, or on the internal forums.
Thanks

I see from your log that you have the intranet zones setup. are you missing any sites/servers from the list?

It might be. I'l get it checked. All I have to do is to add the server's FQDN and short names in the policy, right?
But if that is the case, then I should be seeing this on all clients shouldn't I?
The problem is seen on about 10% of the clients.
What do you think?
Best regards,
Bekir Burak Durmaz
Do all the clients have vault
Do all the clients have vault cache enabled?
Thanks
