This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello everyone!

I got many questuions, some of them may require their own thread, but I'll try to make it short. I'm using BE 2010.

Overwrite protection and append period.

Question 1: If I want to use my tapes' space to the max, and i need to keep them safe from overwriting, which append period should I choose?

For example I make backup monthly and I need to keep 1 year old data(12 month rotation policy).

Question 2: If I will set overwrite period to 12 month and append period - infinite-allow append, will it use the maximum of my tapes' space? Won't it be like that: 1st month backup writes on the 1st tape, then it's marked as under OPP, and the 2nd month backup will be written on the 2nd tape(cause 1st tape is protected).(That's my personal issue)

Question 3: how does OPP and APP REALLY works. I read many threads and official Symantec explanation of it, but still don't get it.

If I want to make a 12 month rotation cycle for monthly backup, so the 1st month tape comes to use after 11 backups, should I set 11 month protection period and 1 day append period?(or 1 month append period, to use the maximum space?) This things have blown my mind.

To generalize this all - the main question. How to configure sets for 3 rotation policies:

1st for daily differential backup, cycle 3 month;

2nd for weekly full backup, cycle 6 month;

3rd for monthly backup, cycle 1 year.

I need to use the whole space on every tape.

It's kinda hard for me to imagine something like this correctly working.

I'm sorry for bothering so much, but I'm out of ideas. Please help.

With best regards Vladimir.

RE: Overwrite protection/append period. Maximum tape space issue

1)    To maximize use of your tape space, you are correct that you need to use Append (if you job will not fill a tape by itself)

2)    Yes, that will maximize the usage  However, every time you append you extend the OPP based on teh date/time that the Append ends

3)    OPP is calculated from the time the first data stops writing to the tapee (ie the Overwrite job.  If you job starts Fri at 2100 and ends at 0230 on Sat, a one week or seven day OPP will prevent the tape from being overwritten until the following Sunday.  OPP is also reset each time you append to the tape.  Say you run an APPEND job Monday at 2200 that ends Tues ar 0100, that same seven day OPP will keep you from overwriting the tap until the Following WED

       APP is calculated from the time the First/Overwrite job starts writing data to the tape.  This is never changed until the next Overwrite job is run, no matter how many Append jobs are run.

For your Daily Diff three month protection use 90 days

For the second and third, just use 6months or 1 year

Absolutley

However, for disk jobs, you should not use Append, but make them Overwrite only
