  • 1.  Package Server Bandwidth Throttling - Is it possible?

My company is new to Altiris and I just noticed a "small" configuration issue just yesterday. I just added the last few (10 or so) Microsoft patches to Altiris for patch deployment and suddenly our network had a massive spike in traffic for an extended period of time. Long story short... Altiris decided to instantly send all 450 Meg worth of packages to our nine WAN connected office Package Servers without any concern about how much bandwidth it took to do this. You can guess the number of network performance complaints we received... I also noticed that I had no convenient way to stop, pause or schedule (for future instances) the Package Server replication. Since I had never used Altiris to send anything so massive through our environment before, I had not seen this problem previously. My questions are as follows: Is there a way to throttle the amount of bandwidth that is used for Package Server replication? Is there any way to stop or pause the replication? Is there a way to schedule replication to occur off-hours? I have already taken a look through the manuals and searched the Juice forums without any clear answers. I have seen information that leads me to believe that it is possible to throttle the bandwidth, but being new to the product, I don't yet know where I should be looking for this setting. Thanks to all in advance. Server Info: Windows 2003 Server (SP2) Altiris 6.0.6074 (SP 3 + R5)

Out of the box, NS comes with an Altiris Agent Configuration Policy called "All Package Servers." This policy controls how the Altiris agent on your package servers functions. It can be found my choosing the Configuration Tab on the NS and scrolling down to Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Configuration > "All Package Servers" Change the "Request New Configuration information every" setting to something more appropriate for your replication schedule. Change the Bandwidth/Throttling settings to "Throttle regardless of connection speed" and then define a Throttling speed. You might also consider using blockouts, but these can get tricky. I would stick with the first two and see if that helps out. Hope this helps.
